Dr. Jenfan Muswere provides clarity on Masvingo helicopter accident

In the wake of the helicopter crash on Sunday in Masvingo, Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere has offered important clarifications about the incident. The accident took place shortly after the completion of the Munhumutapa National Youth Housing Programme’s ground-breaking ceremony, which was part of the Munhumutapa Day celebrations attended by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Dr. Muswere assured the public that President Mnangagwa was not aboard the ill-fated helicopter and, therefore, was unharmed. The President’s presence at the event was accompanied by First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, Vice President Kembo Mohadi, Zanu PF Chairperson and Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, along with other high-ranking officials from both the government and Zanu PF.

According to Dr. Muswere, the helicopter involved in the accident was scheduled to transport President Mnangagwa, but a technical malfunction led to the crash. Fortunately, the collision did not result in any fatalities, though the aircraft did have crew members on board.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has promptly initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Dr. Muswere stated that a comprehensive report will be made public once the investigation is completed.

This incident, occurring after a significant national event celebrating developmental milestones, has heightened public interest in aviation safety standards and the protection of senior government officials. The government’s prompt communication and response are being acknowledged as crucial in addressing these concerns and maintaining public trust.
