The ruling party of Mozambique, Frelimo, is ramping up its election campaign as it prepares for a rally in Chegutu, Mashonaland West province. Scheduled for this weekend at Chegutu Hall, the event aims to raise awareness about the upcoming elections and rally support for Frelimo’s new presidential candidate, Daniel Francisco Chapo.
Chapo, 47, was nominated to succeed incumbent President Filipe Nyusi and is expected to play a crucial role in Frelimo’s strategy ahead of the presidential elections set for October. His selection followed a strong showing, with 94.1% of the votes cast by members of the party’s Central Committee during an extraordinary session.
The rally is anticipated to attract around 300 guests, including notable figures like Zanu PF provincial chairperson Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, who will deliver solidarity speeches. This collaboration reflects the historical ties between Frelimo and Zanu PF, rooted in their shared experiences during the liberation struggles.
Sarah Cossa, chairperson of Frelimo’s Chegutu branch, emphasized the importance of the event in engaging Mozambican registered voters residing in Chegutu and surrounding farming areas. “This rally aims to spread information on the upcoming elections in Mozambique and Frelimo candidate Cde Daniel Chapo,” she stated.
Chapo brings significant experience to his candidacy. A law graduate, he served as the governor of Inhambane province since March 2016 and has an academic background in constitutional law and political science. Notably, he is the first Frelimo presidential candidate born after Mozambique’s independence in 1975, marking a new generational shift for the party that has governed the nation since its liberation from Portuguese colonial rule. As the election date approaches, Frelimo’s efforts to mobilize support and enhance voter engagement are crucial in maintaining its political stronghold in Mozambique.
