Harare motorist charged with kidnapping and inciting violence

A 23-year-old Harare motorist, Gift Nyadzawo, appeared in court on Tuesday facing serious charges, including kidnapping two City Parking officers and inciting public violence. He was remanded in custody by magistrate Patricia Kamwanda, with a bail ruling expected on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Zebediah Bofu informed the court that Nyadzawo was arrested on September 12 after he parked in a prohibited area. When instructed to drive to the Harare City Council’s Central Stores, he allegedly diverted his route toward Mbare, where he incited a group of touts and vendors to assault the City Parking officers.

In a related case, 26-year-old commuter omnibus driver Kelvin Mhasi also appeared before the court, charged with culpable homicide. Prosecutor Bofu detailed that on the same day, Mhasi negligently drove a Toyota Hiace along Fife Avenue, striking a pedestrian who later succumbed to serious injuries at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Both Nyadzawo and Mhasi remain in custody while the court considers their bail applications. The State has expressed strong opposition to Mhasi’s bail due to the gravity of the charges.
