Imposter doctor busted at Mpilo Central Hospital

In a disturbing turn of events, a fake medical doctor was apprehended at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo on Tuesday after being caught illegally treating patients in the outpatient department. The suspect, identified as Prosper Mpofu, raised suspicions when a patient presented an unusual prescription, prompting hospital staff to investigate further. Upon scrutiny, medical personnel discovered that the prescription contained inappropriate medications for the patient’s condition, leading to Mpofu’s immediate arrest.

A witness to the incident, Mr. Thabani Ndlovu, recounted his experience with the impostor. He learned about Mpofu through a friend from church and sought his help for his wife, who has a heart condition. Ndlovu described how they were instructed to meet Mpofu at the hospital. After waiting, they decided to consult a legitimate doctor instead, only to encounter Mpofu while waiting in the outpatient department.

Ndlovu explained, “After meeting with the fake doctor, we were taken to one of the rooms in the outpatient section. That’s when hospital officials intervened and arrested Mpofu on the spot.” ZBC News obtained copies of the suspect’s prescriptions, revealing numerous mistakes, including incorrect dosages and misspellings of drug names. These glaring errors underscored Mpofu’s lack of medical knowledge and bolstered allegations of his fraudulent activities.

Hospital authorities stated that Mpofu managed to infiltrate the medical facility by posing as a qualified doctor, donning a white coat, and carrying a stethoscope to create the illusion of legitimacy. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the duration of Mpofu’s impersonation and whether any patients were harmed during his time at the hospital. Inspector Abednico Ncube, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Bulawayo, confirmed the arrest, stating, “The individual was apprehended after he was found treating patients without proper qualifications or authorization. We are investigating how he evaded detection for this long.” This incident raises serious concerns about patient safety and the measures in place to prevent such breaches in medical facilities.
