Barney Kavai, the founder of Kavai Precious Metals (KPM), and his partner Ashley Makara have been remanded in custody following allegations of defrauding Bulgarian businessman Adam Markov out of $200,000.
Markov claims he was convinced to invest this sum for a stake in Crown Mine, which he believed was owned by Makara. He asserts that the investment was supposed to lead to increased production at the mine. However, Kavai and Makara later disputed Markov’s claims, labeling the money as a loan rather than an investment.
Markov insists he was misled throughout the process, leading to the current legal proceedings. The case has garnered attention due to the substantial amount involved and the international nature of the allegations.
A bail hearing for Kavai and Makara has been scheduled for Monday, where the court will determine whether they can be released while the case proceeds. The situation remains fluid as both parties prepare to present their arguments in court.
