The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faction led by Professor Welshman Ncube has unveiled new appointments in a bid to strengthen its communication and legal affairs. Willias Madzimure has been named the new spokesperson, while Jacob Mafume will transition to the role of secretary for legal affairs. Kurauone Chihwayi has been appointed as Ncube’s personal spokesman.
In a statement released on Sunday, Professor Ncube stated that these leadership changes are designed to “enhance our communication capabilities” as the party navigates its internal challenges.
Mafume, who had been serving as the interim spokesman since Nelson Chamisa stepped down in January, will now concentrate on legal matters. Chamisa’s resignation followed allegations of infiltration within the party, leaving a leadership vacuum that Ncube temporarily filled. Ncube’s leadership is currently challenged by a rival faction led by Jameson Timba, a former Harare senator and Chamisa loyalist, which has added to the internal discord.
Further complicating the situation, Sengezo Tshabangu, who previously claimed the position of secretary-general, has established a parallel CCC structure. Tshabangu has been sworn in as a senator and has taken on the role of leader of the opposition in Parliament. This move has intensified the factional struggle within CCC.
The party’s internal divisions are set to be further scrutinized later this month when state funding for political parties is allocated. The CCC is expected to receive ZIG 22 million based on its performance in the 2023 general elections, while Zanu PF is anticipated to receive ZIG 48 million. This funding distribution will provide insights into which CCC faction is officially recognized by the Zanu PF government and may influence future party dynamics. As the CCC navigates this period of significant internal strife, the new leadership roles and the upcoming state funding allocation will likely play a crucial role in shaping the party’s future trajectory.
