Three women from Nyanga, including one identified as Mai Oliver, have been remanded for community service following their appearance in court on Tuesday. The trio was sentenced to three months and two weeks of community service after being apprehended in connection with a disturbing viral video that captured a violent assault.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed Mai Oliver and two other women attacking another woman in a confrontation linked to accusations of infidelity. In the footage, Mai Oliver is seen accusing the victim of having an affair with her husband, known only as Baba Oliver. Despite the victim’s attempts to deny the allegations, the assault continued, leading to widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Zimbabwe Republic Police Deputy Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Blessmore Chishaka confirmed the arrests, addressing the public’s concerns about the incident. “As ZRP, we noted the concerns of the general public following the circulation of a video where a woman is assaulted viciously by other women. We would like to confirm that this incident happened in Nyanga, and the three women have since been arrested. They appeared in court, and the matter is being dealt with.”
The court’s decision to impose community service reflects the seriousness of the offense while providing an alternative to incarceration. The sentenced women will be required to contribute to their community as part of their punishment. The case highlights the ongoing issues related to violence and social media’s role in amplifying such incidents.
