Remains of seven individuals discovered in Mazowe mine shaft

Tragedy has struck at Elvingz Mine on Makalanga Farm in Mazowe, where the remains of seven individuals were found in a mine shaft. The grim discovery was made by workers operating an excavator who were preparing for blasting operations when they unearthed the remains amid debris.

According to Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha, the deputy provincial police spokesperson for Mashonaland Central, the remains were found alongside various items, including old torn black plastic, clothing, shoe heels, blankets, dislodged human bones, and what appeared to be human hair. “The truth shall come out after a forensic examination at Parirenyatwa Hospital to establish the possible number of bodies, the period of death, and the probable cause of death,” Chikasha stated.

The clothing recovered has been described as “old-fashioned,” primarily green in color, suggesting they likely belonged to males. In addition to clothing, several old-fashioned blankets were also uncovered at the site. Chikasha detailed that the remains were located at the top of a mountain where open-cast mining occurs, approximately 30 meters deep.

Notably, some trousers contained human bones, indicating that bodies may have been thrown into the shaft intact. Detectives from CID Bindura, along with forensic experts, have estimated the number of victims to be seven based on the count of trousers found with the remains.

The remains have been placed in exhibit bags and referred to the Mazowe police for further management. Authorities are actively investigating the case and are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as they seek to unravel the circumstances surrounding this tragic discovery.
