A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday night on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, resulting in the deaths of two individuals whose bodies were burned beyond recognition in a head-on collision between two South African-registered haulage trucks. The incident took place at the 60-kilometer peg, where both vehicles caught fire upon impact.
The Bulawayo Fire Brigade responded promptly, receiving the alert at 23:30 hours and arriving at the scene at 00:14 hours. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, the trucks were fully engulfed in flames. It has been confirmed that there were no passengers in either vehicle and the identities of the deceased, presumed to be the drivers, remain unverified by the police.
According to Mr. Mhlangano Moyo, Acting Chief Fire Officer of the Bulawayo Fire Brigade, the accident occurred when one of the trucks, traveling towards Victoria Falls, veered into the wrong lane, leading to the fatal collision. “The fire brigade observed a body burnt beyond recognition from each haulage truck, so we assume they were the drivers, but we will wait for conclusive investigations to determine the identities of the deceased,” stated Mr. Moyo.
Firefighters employed specialized equipment, including two high-pressure hose reels and jaws of life rescue tools, to extinguish the flames and recover the bodies trapped within the wreckage. The road was temporarily closed off to facilitate the fire brigade’s operations and ensure the safety of responders. The cause of the accident and the circumstances surrounding the collision are currently under investigation, as authorities work to uncover the details of this tragic incident.
