This week, a tragic incident occurred on the Harare-Mutare highway when a haulage truck driver was brutally attacked by robbers after offering a lift to what he believed were harmless hitch-hikers. The driver was stabbed and severely beaten but is fortunate to have survived the assault, thanks to the timely intervention of passers-by.
The Harare-Mutare highway, known for its scenic beauty and once considered a relatively safe route, has recently become a hotspot for criminal activity. The increase in robberies has particularly targeted motorists, especially those transporting passengers or with broken-down vehicles.
On Wednesday, following the latest attack, police issued a warning to drivers, advising them, particularly those operating heavy trucks and private cars, to avoid picking up strangers. This comes in response to a concerning surge in robbery incidents along the highway.
The assault took place just outside Rusape, where five armed robbers, initially posing as passengers from Harare, launched a violent attack. The robbers were joined by three more accomplices who emerged from hiding to carry out the attack. They demanded cash and mobile phones before attacking the driver. Fortunately, the attack was interrupted by passers-by who came to the driver’s aid. He was subsequently taken to Rusape Hospital for medical treatment. The attackers fled the scene and remain at large, raising fears of further incidents.
The attack occurred near a location where traffic police and the Vehicle Inspectorate Department frequently conduct checkpoints. Despite these measures, the robbers managed to carry out their plan. Police have not yet disclosed the driver’s identity as investigations continue, according to Deputy National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Blessmore Chishaka.
In response to the increasing danger, Rusape district police have issued a statement urging drivers to avoid stopping or parking in unsafe areas, to refrain from carrying unknown passengers, and to seek roadside assistance if their vehicles break down. They recommend traveling in convoys and reporting any suspicious activity to the police.
An audio clip shared on social media by one of the rescuers revealed that the attack occurred around 11:30 pm on Tuesday. The truck driver had picked up two men who seemed to be travelers but were later joined by three more robbers. The assailants’ demand for cash and mobile phones escalated into a violent attack. The rescuer, who arrived shortly after the attack, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the heightened risks and advised against carrying strangers. He also suggested that travelers consider using buses for added safety.
This incident follows a related case from July, where three armed robbers targeting motorists along highways were sentenced to significant prison terms. William Boka received 86 years, Darlington Maruba 52 years, and Kudakwashe Boka seven years, all for multiple charges of robbery and attempted murder. Their sentencing highlighted the alarming rise in highway robberies, with these individuals known for targeting vehicles, including those that had broken down. As investigations continue and authorities work to apprehend the current suspects, drivers are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant while traveling along the Harare-Mutare highway.
