Warrant issued for arrest of late former President Mugabe’s son

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of the late former President Robert Mugabe, has been issued an arrest warrant following his failure to appear in court. Chatunga was scheduled for a routine remand appearance at the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday in connection with charges stemming from his arrest two weeks prior.

Chatunga, who faces charges of disorderly conduct and possession of prohibited knives, failed to attend the court session as required. His legal troubles began after an incident on August 31, when his vehicle, driven by a South African national, was stopped at the Bubi Security Roadblock in Beitbridge.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the driver of the vehicle was asked to present his passport and vehicle registration documents. Instead of complying, Chatunga allegedly handed his passport to the police officer, prompting the officer to instruct the driver to pull the vehicle over.

Prosecutors claim that Chatunga became agitated when the officer asked the driver to park the vehicle further off the road. He is said to have exited the vehicle and confronted the officer, exclaiming, “What are you doing, you are delaying me for the fourth time. I am rushing to a wedding in Harare; check my passport, don’t you know who I am?”

During the altercation, a small brown knife reportedly fell from Chatunga’s black hooded fleece jacket. The police recovered the knife, leading to Chatunga’s arrest on charges related to both disorderly conduct and possession of the prohibited weapon. The arrest warrant reflects Chatunga’s continued legal challenges and his failure to adhere to court proceedings, adding further complications to his legal situation.
