In a recent incident that has drawn significant attention, a South African woman named Mkumla shared a disturbing experience involving a loaf of bread she purchased from a local shop. In a detailed Facebook post, Mkumla described the events that led to her discovering what appeared to be rodent contamination in her bread.
On August 27, Mkumla bought a loaf of SASKO Low GI Seeded Whole Wheat brown bread from a local store. Over the following days, she used slices from the loaf to make toast without any issue. However, on the morning of August 31, while preparing toast, she noticed something unsettling. “I took the bread out of the fridge and saw something disgusting and scary,” she wrote. She took a picture and sent it to her friends for their opinions. One friend suggested that the object looked like a rat, which Mkumla initially found hard to believe but later considered plausible.
Mkumla returned to the shop where she bought the bread, only to be advised to file a complaint directly with the supplier. She subsequently emailed the supplier, including a video and photos of the contaminated bread.
Sasko, the company responsible for the bread, responded with an apology. According to Mkumla, a representative from Sasko explained that the high temperatures in the bakery could have contributed to the issue and assured her that measures were being implemented to prevent such occurrences in the future. The representative also assured her that there would be no health implications for her. Mkumla found this response insufficient and described the experience as both traumatic and disgusting. She was disappointed with the company’s handling of the situation.
In a statement to Independent Media, Cornel Vermeulen from PepsiCo South Africa (the parent company of Sasko) acknowledged the incident and confirmed that it was an isolated case. Vermeulen stated that the affected loaf did not meet the company’s rigorous standards. After receiving the returned loaf from the store, it was confirmed to be contaminated by a rodent.
Vermeulen assured that an investigation was underway, including sampling and reviewing records from the batch in question. No discrepancies were found in other samples. The company has also been in contact with Mkumla to keep her updated on the investigation’s progress. This incident has raised concerns about food safety and quality control, prompting calls for better oversight and preventive measures in food production and distribution.
