Zimbabwean cricketer Tarisai Musakanda has been arrested and faces a serious charge of attempted murder following a violent domestic dispute with his wife, Tinodiwanashe Makunike, also known as Mai Dewei. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has cast a shadow over Musakanda’s personal life, already marred by previous legal troubles.
Musakanda, who has represented Zimbabwe in five Tests, 16 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 12 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), has not played international cricket in nearly two years. His arrest adds to a troubling series of events in his personal life, including a fatal road accident in 2022 for which he faced legal scrutiny but was later cleared.
According to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the altercation unfolded after Mai Dewei had hired two men to build a shelter for her vending site. The situation escalated when Musakanda confronted the men over their payment, leading to a violent clash. Witnesses report that the confrontation occurred around 3 a.m., disturbing neighbors with Mai Dewei’s cries for help.
A neighbor who witnessed the incident described the distressing scene, stating, “We were awakened by their noise, Mai Dewei shouting for help and we rushed there. Upon arriving, Musakanda was holding a knife and his wife trying to block and she got injured. When we restrained them, Mai Dewei had been stabbed on her back and we rushed her to the hospital.”
Mai Dewei sustained multiple injuries, including stab wounds to her back and hands. The neighbor also revealed that this was not the first instance of violence between the couple, mentioning a previous incident where Musakanda had assaulted his wife with a bat. Musakanda is currently detained at Kwekwe Central Police Station. The case has drawn significant attention due to his status as a former national cricketer and the nature of the allegations.
This incident follows Musakanda’s prior legal issues related to a 2022 road accident in which he was charged with culpable homicide for the death of former tennis player Gwinyai Chingoka, although he was ultimately acquitted. The ongoing investigation will determine the full extent of Musakanda’s charges and the legal repercussions he may face. As the case develops, the cricketing community and the public await further details on this troubling situation.
