ZRP criticized for slow response to viral video involving Baba Oliver’s girlfriend

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is facing criticism for their delayed response to a viral video that shows a woman being assaulted by another woman and two accomplices at a borehole. The video, which has sparked outrage and concern on social media, depicts a confrontation where the victim is attacked over allegations of having an affair with one of the assailants’ husbands. The incident, which occurred while the victim was holding a baby, was captured by bystanders until an unidentified man intervened.

Despite the video gaining widespread attention, critics argue that the ZRP’s response has been sluggish. Private investigator Tafadzwa Chidawa, also known as Detective Kedha, has already identified and interviewed the suspects featured in the footage. The Herald reports that the police have arrested several individuals connected to the incident. In response, ZRP deputy national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Blessmore Chishaka started the ZRP’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, acknowledging the viral video and confirming that investigations are underway.

“Reference is made to a video that has gone viral on social media platforms in which two women are seen assaulting another woman on allegations of having an extra-marital affair with one of the women’s husbands. Investigations are in progress,” Chishaka’s statement read.

The ZRP also issued a broader call for non-violent conflict resolution, emphasizing the importance of self-restraint and peaceful dispute resolution.

“The ZRP reiterates that the public must exercise self-restraint when faced with disputes or disagreements with friends, relatives, or any member of society. Communities are implored to find peaceful ways of resolving differences or disputes without resorting to violence,” the statement concluded.

However, many Zimbabweans have criticized the ZRP’s response as inadequate and belated. Some have pointed out that Detective Kedha had already conducted substantial investigative work, including identifying the suspects. Additionally, inaccuracies in the ZRP’s statement have been highlighted, such as the mischaracterization of the number of attackers—mentioning two instead of the actual three.

The controversy surrounding the ZRP’s response underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing and resolving publicized incidents of violence. As the investigation continues, the public remains vigilant and hopeful for a resolution that addresses both the immediate concerns of justice and the broader issues of law enforcement efficacy.

Mashonganyika has accused Bwanya of pressuring her to relinquish a 2,000m² plot of land to avoid legal action, alleging that she paid US$10,000 in development fees and US$4,000 for the land’s value to secure a title deed. Read More
