Accident claims 8 lives in Hwedza

A devastating accident on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the loss of eight lives and left 11 others injured when a Nissan Caravan veered off the Hwedza-Goto Road, near Maruta Primary School. The vehicle, which overturned multiple times before landing back on its wheels, was carrying 19 passengers who had just returned from burying a relative in Ruzane Village, about 5 kilometers from Hwedza Centre.

Reports indicate that seven individuals lost their lives at the scene, while an eighth victim succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a hospital in Harare. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic details, highlighting that many of the deceased were believed to be from the same family. “This is a tragic loss for the families involved, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” Nyathi stated.

Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting the injured to Mt St Mary’s Hospital for immediate care. Due to the severity of some injuries, several victims were later transferred to Sally Mugabe and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for more specialized treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Mt St Mary’s Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

The incident has ignited discussions surrounding road safety, particularly the risks associated with overloading vehicles. Authorities are calling for drivers and passengers to adhere to safety regulations to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. As the community mourns this significant loss, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating impact that accidents can have on families and communities.
