Kenyan lawmakers impeach Deputy President over abuse of office

In a significant political development, Kenya’s National Assembly has impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over serious accusations of corruption and abuse of office. The decision, made in a vote on Tuesday night, saw an overwhelming majority of lawmakers supporting the motion, with 281 votes in favor, 44 against, and one abstention. Gachagua’s fate now rests with the Senate, which will consider the matter next.

The impeachment process was preceded by Gachagua and his allies presenting a defense that lasted over 90 minutes. However, their efforts failed to persuade the majority of lawmakers. Gachagua faces accusations of acquiring properties through corrupt means, claims he vehemently denies, asserting that the assets in question belonged to his late brother. Additionally, he has been accused of engaging in ethnic politics and undermining the government.

This political turmoil follows a fallout between Gachagua and President William Ruto, further complicating the deputy president’s position. Gachagua has described the allegations against him as outrageous propaganda aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

Political analysts are weighing in on the implications of Gachagua’s impeachment. Commentator Martin Andati remarked on Gachagua’s strained relationships with other politicians, citing his poor people management skills as a contributing factor to his removal. “His fate is sealed,” Andati said, highlighting Gachagua’s antagonistic approach towards both the MPs and the Senate.

Opposition voices, like that of Robert Mbui, deputy leader of the minority, criticized the focus on Gachagua, arguing that the assembly should prioritize pressing public issues such as the rising cost of living and unemployment. “For a whole day… to deal with one matter, I think we are losing direction,” Mbui stated, emphasizing the need to address broader societal concerns.

This impeachment comes amid a backdrop of widespread protests in Kenya, fueled by allegations of corruption within the government and dissatisfaction over high taxes. Some politicians have even accused Gachagua of orchestrating anti-government demonstrations, a claim he has denied.

Political expert Harman Manyora cautioned that the impeachment sets a precarious precedent for Kenya’s political landscape, warning of potential divisions in an already ethnically charged environment. “A move like this has the potential of negatively impacting the country by causing division,” he stated, noting the risks involved in such political instability.

The debate surrounding Gachagua’s conduct is expected to continue into next week, with indications that he may seek legal recourse to challenge the impeachment or to clear his name of the allegations. As the political drama unfolds, the implications for Kenya’s governance and social cohesion remain a critical concern.
