Amos Chibaya, an activist with the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), faces another night in custody following his arrest on Monday for allegedly inciting public violence. His bail hearing has been postponed to Thursday. Chibaya appeared before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi but was not asked to enter a plea. The state’s case alleges that Chibaya participated in a demonstration outside the Harare Magistrate Court in June, advocating for the release of 77 party activists who had been denied bail alongside their interim leader, Jameson Timba.
During the protest, it is claimed that Chibaya convened a meeting at the court’s entrance, where fellow CCC activists Agency Gumbo and Ostallos Gift Siziba were among the speakers. The prosecution alleges that Chibaya made inciting statements, declaring, “Chi regime chinotya vanhu, chikaona vanhu chinobvunda” (“This regime fears the people; when it sees them, it retreats”). He also voiced that Zimbabwe is “not a ZANU PF” or a “Mnangagwa Dynasty that oppresses people.”
According to the allegations, Chibaya encouraged attendees to rally in large numbers to pressure authorities into releasing their detained colleagues. Some attendees reportedly expressed their willingness to forcibly remove the prisoners, stating in vernacular, “Tichavatora Nechisimba, eheeee” (“We will take them out by force, yes!”). As Chibaya awaits his next court appearance, the case highlights the ongoing tensions between opposition activists and the authorities in Zimbabwe. Houston lawyer Tony Buzbee announced on Tuesday that he is representing 120 individuals who have come forward with sexual assault allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs. Buzbee expects to file lawsuits in both New York and Los Angeles within the next month. The alleged victims comprise an equal number of males and females, including 25 minors, with one individual claiming to have been just nine years old at the time of the assault.
