In a dramatic turn of events, police in Zimbabwe have enlisted the help of Interpol to track down six armed robbers involved in a bold bank heist in Bulawayo last week, where they made off with over US$4.4 million. This incident is now being labeled as the largest bank heist in the country’s history, prompting an intensive manhunt for the suspects, who are believed to have fled to South Africa.
Authorities have mobilized crack teams to Bulawayo and surrounding areas as investigations escalate. The gang is suspected of being linked to a series of high-profile robberies across Zimbabwe, including a notorious cash-in-transit heist last year, which resulted in the theft of nearly 12 kilograms of gold worth US$675,000. The gold was being transported from How Mine to Fidelity Printers and Refiners in October 2022.
From May to October 2023 alone, the gang is thought to have executed multiple raids on financial institutions, money transfer agents, wholesalers, and grocery stores, with Bulawayo witnessing more than US$858,000 and R508,000 stolen across five different heists in just four months. The suspects have been identified as Elijah Vumbunu, known as “Mupositori,” David Sawadye, Israel Zulu, Kudakwashe Mudzingwa alias “Umbro,” Takafa Vumbunu alias “Naison Mahembe,” Paul Chinake, and Brian Murape. Investigators believe they fled to South Africa immediately following the heist.
Elijah Vumbunu, reportedly the mastermind behind the operation, is said to be residing in affluent suburbs of South Africa while running a trucking business. Authorities suspect that his connections in South Africa have allowed the gang to evade capture for an extended period. As the investigation progresses, Zimbabwean law enforcement is working closely with Interpol to bring the fugitives to justice. Police have issued warnings to the public, urging vigilance as the suspects are considered armed and dangerous. The successful resolution of this case could represent a crucial step forward in combating the rise of organized crime in Zimbabwe.
The heist has ignited a nationwide discussion on security measures and the increasing trend of cross-border criminal activities. Law enforcement agencies are under pressure to enhance security protocols and ensure that such brazen crimes do not become a common occurrence. The public remains hopeful that the collaboration with Interpol will yield results, bringing the perpetrators to justice and restoring a sense of safety within communities.
