Waverley Secondary student drowns in Chromepark

A Form 2 student from Waverley Secondary School has been reported drowned in a water trench in Chromepark, near the Jamaya plot. The incident occurred around 11 AM on Monday when the boy went swimming with friends.

Since the drowning, search efforts have been ongoing, but divers have faced challenges due to the trench’s considerable depth. Authorities have confirmed that the trench is believed to have formed as a result of mining activities in the area, raising concerns about the safety of such sites for swimming.

The community is in mourning, and this tragedy underscores the urgent need for increased awareness about the dangers of swimming in unregulated bodies of water. Local officials are expected to discuss safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future and address the risks associated with abandoned mining sites.
