The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has officially announced the results for the 2024 Advanced Level (A-Level) examinations, revealing impressive success rates and some notable trends in student performance. The results were shared in a news conference held on Friday in Harare by ZIMSEC Chairperson, Professor Paul Mapfumo. The results reflect both positive outcomes and a few key shifts in the student demographics, giving a comprehensive view of the state of education at the Advanced Level in Zimbabwe.
The 2024 examination session saw 33,585 candidates who sat for the November examinations, a slight decrease from the 34,427 candidates in 2023. This marks a reduction of 852 candidates or a 2.47% decline in overall participation. Despite the decrease in the number of candidates, the pass rate remains strong, with 94.58% of candidates who sat for at least two subjects achieving Grade E or better.
Professor Mapfumo shared that for candidates who sat for two or more subjects, a total of 31,443 out of 33,585 achieved at least a Grade E, which translates into an impressive pass rate of 94.58%. In terms of school candidates, 29,041 students participated in the examination, slightly fewer than the 29,910 from the previous year. Of these, 28,900 wrote two or more subjects, and 27,509 passed, which results in an even higher pass rate of 95.18% among this group.
Private candidates, who make up a smaller portion of the total number of candidates, saw a slight increase in their numbers from 4,527 in 2023 to 4,544 in 2024. Although their numbers are fewer, they too contributed to the overall success rate, reinforcing the trend of high performance in the examination.
An interesting highlight of the 2024 results is the performance disparity between male and female candidates. Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts, continuing a trend that has been observed in recent years. A total of 17,306 female candidates sat for the A-Level exams, compared to 15,504 male candidates. Among the female candidates, 16,457 passed two or more subjects, yielding a pass rate of 95.94%, which is notably higher than the 92.32% pass rate for male candidates, who numbered 16,092 in total. This represents a 2.81% difference in favor of female candidates.
The disparity in performance between genders highlights a growing trend of female academic achievement in Zimbabwe’s educational system. It may also reflect changing societal norms and the increasing empowerment of women in educational spheres, though further research would be required to fully understand the reasons behind this shift.
For candidates eager to check their results, the ZIMSEC portal, accessible through the ZIMSEC website, will provide all the necessary information online. This digital access ensures that students can swiftly access their performance data without needing to rely on physical results slips.
The release of the 2024 ZIMSEC Advanced Level examination results is largely positive, showcasing high pass rates despite a slight reduction in the total number of candidates. The overall performance rate of 94.58% reflects the continuing resilience and dedication of Zimbabwean students, with an impressive 95.18% pass rate among those sitting for two or more subjects.
However, the most striking trend from the 2024 examination results is the performance gap between male and female candidates, with females achieving better results overall. This trend emphasizes the importance of continued efforts to close gender gaps in education and support students of all backgrounds to achieve academic excellence.
As Zimbabwe continues to navigate challenges in its educational system, these results provide a source of optimism and highlight the potential for further improvements in future examination sessions. It will be interesting to see how these trends evolve in the years to come and what further strategies can be implemented to continue raising the standards of education in the country.
