Explosion at Kwayedza Investments Mine in Mazowe, Mashonaland Central Province, has claimed the lives of two men, sending shockwaves through the local mining community and prompting a full-scale investigation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
The explosion at Mazowe, which occurred on Friday, July 11, 2025, took place under unexplained circumstances and has raised serious concerns regarding safety protocols at the mining site. According to preliminary reports, the two victims—whose identities have not yet been confirmed—were seated near a fire when the deadly blast occurred.
ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident in an official statement, noting that the police are treating the matter with urgency and thoroughness.
“Police in Mazowe are investigating circumstances surrounding a tragic explosion at Kwayedza Investments Mine on July 11,” said Commissioner Nyathi. “The incident claimed the lives of two men who were warming themselves by a fire when the explosion occurred. One of the victims died instantly at the scene, while the other succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a hospital in Concession.”
As news of the explosion in Mazowe spread, the mining site was immediately cordoned off, and police teams began forensic examinations in collaboration with mine safety inspectors from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development. Authorities have also brought in explosive ordinance disposal experts to assess whether any dangerous substances were present at or near the location of the fire.
The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, and law enforcement officials are not ruling out any possibilities. Early speculation has ranged from the presence of buried or improperly stored mining explosives, to the ignition of combustible chemicals or gas emissions from underground operations. However, no definitive conclusions have yet been drawn, and officials are urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified theories until the investigation is complete.
“The area has been secured to preserve any physical evidence that might explain what caused the explosion,” said a ZRP officer at the scene. “We are working closely with mine officials and forensic experts to piece together exactly what happened and ensure there are no ongoing safety risks for other workers.”
Kwayedza Investments Mine, a medium-scale operation involved in gold extraction, has not reported any similar incidents in the past, though it is located in a region that has seen increased artisanal and small-scale mining activities in recent years. The tragedy has renewed focus on mine safety regulations, the storage and disposal of hazardous materials, and the dangers posed by informal or unauthorized mining operations that often operate without adequate safety measures.
Two Killed in Mysterious Explosion at Mazowe Mine, Investigations Underway
Members of the Mazowe community and fellow miners have expressed grief and alarm over the incident, with many calling for stricter enforcement of safety standards and better monitoring of mining activities.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said a mine worker who requested anonymity. “We come to work every day to earn a living, but now we’re worried whether we’ll return home safely. Something needs to change.”
The families of the victims have not yet been officially notified pending confirmation of identities and completion of postmortem examinations. The remains of the deceased have been transferred to the Concession Hospital mortuary.
A representative from the Ministry of Mines who visited the site on Saturday described the incident as “deeply troubling” and assured the public that the government would take all necessary steps to uncover the truth and prevent future occurrences.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy,” said the official. “At this point, our priority is to support the investigation and to evaluate whether there were any violations of safety protocols or negligence involved.”
The tragic explosion at Mazowecomes at a time when Zimbabwe’s mining sector is under increasing pressure to improve worker safety and formalize artisanal mining operations. The sector, while a key contributor to national revenue, continues to face criticism over lax enforcement of regulations and poor working conditions in certain mines.
As investigations continue, the ZRP has urged anyone with information regarding the events leading up to the explosion to come forward. Updates will be provided to the public once more information is available.
For now, the Mazowe mining community remains in mourning, grappling with the sudden loss of two lives in an incident that could have wider implications for mine safety practices across the country.
