Road Accident on Chiremba Road Claims Life of Courier Rider

A somber mood engulfed Chiremba Road in Harare early this morning following a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a motorbike courier employed by Kayz Courier Services. The tragic incident, which occurred during peak traffic hours, has sparked renewed concern over the safety of delivery riders and the broader issue of road safety in the capital.

Eyewitnesses say the courier, whose identity had not been officially released at the time of publication, was struck by a silver Toyota Passo while riding along the busy thoroughfare. According to bystanders, the impact of the collision was violent and the rider died instantly.

“I just heard a loud accident, and when I turned around, the motorbike rider was already lying on the ground,” said one witness who had been walking nearby. “The car seemed to come out of nowhere. It was a terrible sight.”

Emergency services arrived swiftly at the scene, but unfortunately, the rider had already succumbed to his injuries. His lifeless body lay on the tarmac, covered by a sheet, as stunned pedestrians, motorists, and fellow courier riders looked on in disbelief.

The red and black delivery motorbike, clearly marked with the branding of Kayz Courier Services, was found lying several meters away from the body, its front end badly damaged and its cargo container shattered. The Toyota Passo involved in the accident remained parked nearby, its front bumper dented, as police officers cordoned off the area to begin initial investigations.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld by authorities pending notification of next of kin. Police have confirmed that investigations into the cause of the accident are currently underway. Preliminary observations suggest a possible failure to give way or a lapse in driver attention, although exact details have yet to be verified.

Traffic on Chiremba Road was temporarily disrupted for more than an hour as police and emergency medical personnel secured the scene and diverted vehicles. The busy route, which serves as a major access road connecting Harare’s suburbs to the central business district, experienced heavy congestion during the response efforts.

Tragic Road accident Claims Life of Courier Rider on Chiremba Road

The tragic death of the courier rider has added to growing public anxiety over road safety, especially regarding the rise in motorbike couriers on Zimbabwe’s roads. In recent years, the courier and food delivery industry has experienced a boom, with more riders operating under tight deadlines and in high-risk traffic environments.

“We’ve been noticing more and more of these delivery bikes weaving through traffic, and many of them are young and trying to beat time,” said another motorist at the scene. “It’s dangerous for them, especially when cars aren’t looking out for them.”

With courier riders now a common sight on Harare’s roads, the accident has reignited calls for stronger safety measures, including better training for both riders and drivers, as well as enforcement of traffic rules that protect all road users.

Transport advocacy groups have also called on courier companies to provide comprehensive safety gear, proper rider education, and to avoid setting unrealistic delivery times that pressure riders into speeding or taking risks.

Authorities have urged all road users—both drivers and motorcyclists—to exercise caution, maintain safe distances, and obey traffic signals at all times. “This accident is a stark reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said a police officer at the scene. “A life has been lost today. We must do more to prevent such tragedies.”

Photographers Abel Ndooka and his team from Kwayedza were on-site and captured powerful images of the aftermath, showing the gravity of the incident and the need for swift action to improve road safety across the city.

Meanwhile, Kayz Courier Services is yet to issue a formal statement on the loss of their employee, but colleagues who arrived at the scene expressed deep sorrow and called for greater protections for delivery workers.

“This is heartbreaking,” said one fellow rider. “He left home this morning just trying to earn a living. Now he’s gone.”

As the city comes to terms with yet another road fatality, there is hope that this tragedy will serve as a wake-up call for policy makers, companies, and road users to make safety a top priority. The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is ongoing.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
