A devastating road traffic collision near Norton has claimed the lives of three people and left another seriously injured in a tragic sequence of events that unfolded along the Harare–Bulawayo Road. The fatal collision, confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), occurred at approximately 10:00 PM on Monday, July 15, 2025, near the 61-kilometre peg — a stretch of highway increasingly known for deadly accidents.
According to the police, the fatal collision involved three vehicles: a BMW 523D, a Toyota Sienta, and a Shacman truck. Initial investigations suggest that the BMW, which had no passengers, was travelling at high speed in the direction of Harare when it rammed into the rear of the Toyota Sienta, which was also heading towards the capital with three people on board.
The violent impact of the rear-end collision caused the Toyota Sienta to veer uncontrollably into the opposite lane, directly into the path of an oncoming Shacman truck. The resulting head-on collision between the Sienta and the heavy truck proved fatal. The sheer force of the second collision instantly killed three of the Toyota’s occupants, while the fourth was critically injured and rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital in Harare for emergency treatment.
In an official statement, police confirmed: “The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 61-kilometre peg along Harare–Bulawayo Road on 15/07/25 at around 2200 hours in which three people were killed while one person was injured.” The deceased were taken to Norton Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending the notification of their families.
Eyewitnesses described the accident scene as harrowing. “There was total chaos,” said one resident who arrived moments after the collision. “The front of the Sienta was crushed completely. Emergency teams were struggling to retrieve the bodies from the wreckage.”
Three Killed in Tragic Collision Near Norton
The police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the triple-vehicle head-on, with early indications pointing toward speeding and reckless driving. Authorities say they are examining whether the BMW was overtaking improperly or following too closely when it caused the initial rear-end collision.
Traffic safety experts have expressed concern over the increasing frequency of such catastrophic incidents on Zimbabwe’s highways. The Harare–Bulawayo Road, in particular, has seen a rise in fatal collisions, prompting calls for improved road infrastructure and stricter law enforcement.
“This tragic collision is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving,” said a spokesperson from the Zimbabwe Traffic Safety Council. “Rear-end impacts often seem minor, but as we’ve seen here, they can quickly escalate into deadly head-on collisions when high speed and poor judgment are involved.”
The advocate went on to call for immediate government action to address road safety. “We are urging the Ministry of Transport to expedite dualisation of our national highways. Head-on collisions, especially those caused by vehicles being pushed into oncoming traffic, are preventable with proper road design and regulation.”
Local residents and civil society groups have echoed the call for reforms. In communities along the highway, fears of being involved in a deadly head-on are ever-present. “This road is a death trap,” said one Norton resident. “If it’s not potholes or haulage trucks, it’s these high-speed luxury cars treating public roads like race tracks.”
Meanwhile, the ZRP has appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during night-time driving when visibility is reduced and driver fatigue is more likely. Drivers are advised to maintain safe following distances and avoid speeding to prevent similar collisions in the future.
As Zimbabwe mourns yet another tragic loss of life on its roads, the Norton collision adds to the growing list of fatalities linked to preventable road accidents. The authorities are urging any witnesses or individuals with further information about the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
Unless decisive action is taken to improve road safety, experts warn that more lives will be lost in similarly devastating collisions, leaving families shattered and communities in mourning.
