Bulawayo Man Fatally Stabbed in Violent Attack

BULAWAYO -A 25-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Entumbane suburb has died from stab wounds sustained during a violent confrontation with his neighbour, in an incident that has left the community shaken and calling for greater efforts to curb escalating acts of violence.

The victim, identified as Maqhawe Nkomo, reportedly succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack, despite efforts by friends and police to get him medical assistance. The alleged attacker, Mxolisi Ncube (20), also a resident of Entumbane, has since been arrested and is facing a charge of murder.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations into the fatal stabbing were underway. “Police in Bulawayo have arrested accused person Mxolisi Ncube (20) of Entumbane, Bulawayo, in connection with a case of murder,” she said.

According to police, the events unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, August 5, at around 5:30 PM, at the popular C-Turn junction in Entumbane. Witnesses reported that Ncube approached Nkomo, who was in the company of two friends, and confronted him over an earlier dispute.

Inspector Msebele revealed that the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, but tensions had apparently been brewing between the two men. “The accused confronted the now deceased about an undisclosed matter,” she explained. “He accused Nkomo of ganging up with his friends to assault him.”

Nkomo, according to police, denied the accusation and tried to explain that he had not assaulted Ncube, but had only intervened to break up a previous fight. In an attempt to defuse the situation, he reportedly apologised to Ncube.

However, the confrontation took a tragic turn. “The accused then produced a knife and stabbed the deceased once on the right thigh before fleeing the scene,” Msebele said.

The injury proved more serious than initially realised. Friends who were with Nkomo immediately assisted him and accompanied him to the police station to file a report against his attacker.

Police officers quickly responded to the emergency by summoning an ambulance crew. However, Nkomo’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was pronounced dead before he could be transported to hospital.

Authorities suspect that the fatal blow may have severed a major artery, leading to massive blood loss. The post-mortem results are expected to confirm the precise cause of death.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion in Entumbane, with many residents expressing concern over the growing prevalence of knife-related violence in the suburb. Community elders and residents have called for conflict resolution initiatives, arguing that young people are too quick to resort to weapons to settle disputes.

“This is a terrible loss for the community,” said one neighbour, who declined to be named. “Maqhawe was known as a peaceful person. It is sad that a misunderstanding could escalate to the point where a life is lost.”

Police have since appealed to members of the public to come forward with any additional information that may assist in the investigation. Inspector Msebele urged residents to avoid taking matters into their own hands when disagreements arise.

“We strongly encourage people to resolve disputes peacefully and to seek assistance from community leaders, police, or other mediation platforms rather than resorting to violence,” she said. “The law will take its course, and perpetrators of violent crimes will be brought to justice.”

Knife crime has become an increasing concern in urban centres across Zimbabwe, with several reported cases in recent months involving fatal stabbings linked to domestic disputes, romantic rivalries, and misunderstandings between friends or neighbours.

Security experts warn that the easy availability of knives and the lack of structured community engagement programmes contribute to the problem. They have urged the government and local authorities to invest more in youth development projects, education, and awareness campaigns to reduce the prevalence of such incidents.

As Ncube awaits his court appearance, Nkomo’s family is preparing for his burial. Relatives described him as a caring young man who was trying to build a future for himself. “We are heartbroken,” a family member said. “We want justice for Maqhawe, but nothing will bring him back.”

The case has reignited debate over the need for stronger enforcement of laws regarding dangerous weapons and the importance of swift police intervention in escalating disputes.

For now, the Entumbane community is left mourning yet another life cut short by violence — a stark reminder of how quickly tempers can flare and end in tragedy.
