A devastating road traffic accident claimed the lives of two people and left eight others injured along the Mutare–Nyanga Road on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The collision occurred near Pafiwa High School, in the scenic but often treacherous Mutasa District.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the crash took place at the 52-kilometre peg, a stretch known for its winding curves and challenging driving conditions, especially during inclement weather.
According to preliminary police reports, a Nissan Caravan kombi transporting six passengers towards Nyanga was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Corolla traveling in the opposite direction toward Mutare. The Corolla was carrying three occupants at the time of the crash.
The impact was severe, resulting in the immediate death of two passengers. The victims’ bodies were subsequently transported to Bonda Mission Hospital for post-mortem examinations. “The noise of the collision was terrifying,” said one witness. “Both vehicles were badly damaged. It looked like the kombi had veered into the opposite lane, but investigations are ongoing.”
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have since launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident. Authorities are coordinating with social services to provide support to the victims’ relatives, as well as the injured patients.
Bonda Mission Hospital has confirmed that the injured are receiving medical care, and some are in stable condition while others remain critical. Medical staff continue to monitor their progress closely.
In light of this tragic incident, the Zimbabwe Republic Police have once again urged all road users to prioritize safety at all times. Drivers are encouraged to obey speed limits, avoid overtaking in dangerous areas, refrain from driving when fatigued or under the influence, and always wear seat belts.
“The loss of life on our roads is unacceptable, and every accident we prevent saves families from heartbreak,” a police spokesperson said. “We call on all motorists to exercise vigilance and respect road rules to protect themselves and others.”
