Woman Walks Out on Children Following Cellphone Row

Mutare Woman -A domestic dispute in Sakubva, Mutare, took a shocking turn over the weekend when a woman allegedly abandoned her two young children following a heated confrontation with her husband over claims of infidelity.

Chiedza Kamusasa, 27, reportedly left the couple’s rented home on Saturday, taking with her the six-year-old and one-year-old’s vital documents, including the younger child’s health records, as well as US$220 intended for a medical check-up. Her departure came after her husband, Joseph Rupiya, 39, allegedly confiscated her mobile phone, accusing her of maintaining an extramarital relationship with a former classmate.

Rupiya, speaking to journalists, confirmed the incident and painted a picture of a long-troubled marriage. He said that tensions had persisted for years, exacerbated by his inability to complete the traditional lobola payment, a cultural custom formalising marriage.

“My woman has turned our home into a prison,” Rupiya said. “I discovered through WhatsApp messages that she has been seeing someone else for quite some time. She left the children behind, and now I have her phone.”

The couple’s marital difficulties reportedly predate this incident, with sources indicating that previous arguments over trust and fidelity had ended in temporary reconciliations. However, Rupiya believes that this latest fallout marks a turning point in their relationship. “This time feels different. I can’t keep begging her to stay,” he added.

Family dynamics have also been affected. Rupiya noted that his father-in-law expressed anger over Woman’s sudden departure, demanding to know her whereabouts, yet provided little support in caring for the children left behind. The young siblings are now in Rupiya’s care, while relatives attempt to mediate between the estranged couple.

Neighbours and community members described the incident as alarming, highlighting the emotional toll on the children. “It is very sad for the children. They are too young to understand what is happening, and now they are left confused and anxious,” said a neighbour who requested anonymity.

Psychologists warn that children exposed to sudden parental separation or abandonment, particularly in the context of domestic disputes, may experience heightened stress, anxiety, and long-term emotional trauma. “The wellbeing of these children is critical,” said a local child psychologist. “They need stability, reassurance, and access to their basic needs, including healthcare and education.”

Mutare Woman Abandons Children After Domestic Dispute Over Infidelity Allegations

Authorities have yet to intervene directly, but social welfare agencies in Mutare are reportedly monitoring the situation. The children’s health documents being taken away has raised concerns about potential disruptions to their medical care, especially for the one-year-old who may require routine vaccinations or check-ups.

Community activists emphasise the importance of family support structures in such situations. “Extended family can play a crucial role in protecting children during domestic conflicts,” said a local women’s rights advocate. “But it requires cooperation and prioritising the children’s best interests over adult disagreements.”

Meanwhile, the Woman is said to have travelled to Harare following the dispute, though her exact location remains unconfirmed. Neighbours indicated that she left without informing friends or family, leaving questions about her intentions and the safety of the children she took with her.

The incident has sparked broader conversations in Sakubva about domestic tensions, marital responsibilities, and the social pressures that can lead to family breakdowns. Experts suggest that unresolved disputes, combined with financial and cultural pressures, often escalate into situations that place children at risk.

Rupiya called for calm and understanding from the community. “I am doing my best to care for our children while family members and friends try to mediate,” he said. “I hope she returns, but my priority right now is to ensure the children are safe and their needs are met.”

As the situation unfolds, local authorities, social workers, and community members are watching closely, hoping for a resolution that safeguards the wellbeing of the children and addresses the underlying marital conflicts. The story serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities
