MUSHUMBI POOLS – A wave of anger and disbelief has swept through the community of Mushumbi Pools after the arrest of a local village head who is accused of masterminding a series of stock thefts in the area. The traditional leader, 45-year-old Isaac Svinugwa, was taken into police custody alongside three alleged accomplices, sending shockwaves through a community that had long relied on him for guidance, mediation, and protection.
Svinugwa was arrested together with Lyod Marovha, Knowledge Nhete, and Herbert Gatsi, following police investigations into a string of cattle thefts that had troubled villagers for months. According to authorities, one of the suspects, Marovha, reportedly implicated the village head as the ringleader of the criminal operation. His statement led officers to move swiftly in detaining all four men.
Mashonaland Central Deputy Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Lucy Chigwenhese, confirmed the arrests and said investigations are still underway. “I can confirm the arrest of Svinugwa, Marovha, Knowledge Nhete and Herbert Gatsi in connection with a series of stock thefts in Mushumbi Pools,” she said. “The suspects are assisting the police with further inquiries.”
Initial reports suggest that the cattle thefts occurred sometime in November. Police allege that the group targeted grazing areas where villagers’ livestock roamed freely, an arrangement common in rural communities. According to the allegations, cattle belonging to two local residents, 45-year-old Michael Chininga and 92-year-old elder Luckson Nyamarombo, were stolen before being slaughtered and sold to butcheries.
