Marodza Elevated to Brigadier-General

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) yesterday witnessed a significant milestone as Lieutenant-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, Commander of the Army, conferred the rank of Brigadier-General on Colonel Jones Sasata Marodza at a formal ceremony held at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks in Harare. The promotion, approved by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, marks a major step in Colonel Marodza’s military career and reflects his leadership capabilities within the Defence Forces.

Addressing attendees at the ceremony, Lt-Gen Tapfumaneyi emphasised that the promotion followed a rigorous and comprehensive assessment by the Defence Forces’ Command Element. He noted that such elevations are not automatic but are based on demonstrated competence, leadership qualities, and the ability to assume greater responsibility.

“On your elevation from the rank of Colonel to Brigadier-General by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, your promotion is testimony to the fact that you possess the required qualities and attributes of military leadership at a general level,” Lt-Gen Tapfumaneyi said. “Your appointment is the result of a thorough and exhaustive assessment by the Command Element.”

The Commander highlighted that promotion to the rank of Brigadier-General carries with it significant duties and heightened expectations. Officers are required to lead not only through orders but by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and strategic thinking. He urged Brig-Gen Marodza to embrace teamwork and collaborate with colleagues across the Army to meet the challenges that accompany the rank.

“By now, you should have noted that appointment to the substantive rank of Brigadier-General is certainly not a walk in the park,” Lt-Gen Tapfumaneyi added. “It comes with increased responsibilities, and you will be expected to demonstrate the merit of the rank you have been granted.”

He further underscored the strategic context in which the promotion occurs. The ZNA is currently navigating a transitional phase characterised by both economic and institutional revitalisation. As such, every officer at the general level is expected to contribute meaningfully to organisational efficiency, national security, and institutional growth.

Military Shake-Up: Marodza Promoted to Brigadier-General

“Let me once again congratulate you on your deserved elevation to the rank of Brigadier-General, and I wish you the very best in your appointment,” Lt-Gen Tapfumaneyi said. “You are the only Brigadier-General we have promoted this year, making this a major achievement for you personally and for your family.”

Brig-Gen Marodza, in his acceptance remarks, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Commander, the Defence Forces leadership, and his family. He highlighted the collective effort behind his promotion, noting that the support of his team and loved ones has been integral to his success.

“On my own behalf, that of my wife, my children, some of whom are present here, and that of the entire family, I would like to sincerely thank you, General in Command of the Zimbabwe National Army, for bestowing upon me this promotion today,” Brig-Gen Marodza said. “This award is not just for me; it is for my family and for the entire Zimbabwe Defence Forces in particular.”

He acknowledged the opportunities he has received throughout his military career and pledged continued loyalty to the Constitution of Zimbabwe and the core values of the Defence Forces. Brig-Gen Marodza emphasised his commitment to lead with diligence, uphold the highest standards of military professionalism, and contribute positively to the ongoing growth and development of the ZNA.

“I appreciate the hard work and dedication of my team members and recognise their contribution to our shared achievements,” he said. “I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead as I assume this new role.”

Colleagues and senior officials at the ceremony noted that Brig-Gen Marodza’s promotion reflects not only his personal achievements but also the broader ethos of the Zimbabwe National Army, which values competence, integrity, and leadership potential. The event underscored the Army’s commitment to nurturing capable officers who can effectively navigate both operational and strategic responsibilities in service of national security.

The conferral of Brig-Gen Marodza’s epaulettes marks a significant moment in the ZNA, signalling both recognition of individual merit and the ongoing evolution of the Army’s leadership structure. As Brig-Gen Marodza assumes his new duties, he joins the senior ranks at a time of transformation, expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the Army’s objectives, enhancing operational effectiveness, and mentoring the next generation of military leaders.

The promotion ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of loyalty, duty, and service to the nation, reflecting the enduring values of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the professional dedication required of officers entrusted with senior command responsibilities.
