Some parts of the country are experiencing light rains after the downgrading of Cyclone Freddy into a low-pressure system after it made landfall in Mozambique on Friday.
In Masvingo, moderate rains have been experienced across the province since Saturday, despite some strong winds being reported in Chiredzi District.
Masvingo Provincial Civil Protection Department Acting Chairperson Ms Rosemary Chingwe says the situation remains calm, with the department remaining on high alert for any emergencies.
“Here in Masvingo, our district departments remain activated and we have received reports of strong winds in Chiredzi which have destroyed some sugarcane farms though assessments are being carried out,” she said.
Masvingo was among provinces that were expected to be affected by Cyclone Freddy which made landfall in neighbouring Mozambique on Friday.
Manicaland province, whose memories of Cyclone Idai devastating effects will remain for generations to come, has been spared from Cyclone Freddy battering after the tropical storm changed its course, with low rains being experienced across the province.
Reports indicate that a few schools and households have been affected in the province, including Crossdale High and Samanyanga Primary Schools in Nyanga, Chichichi and Mugondi Primary schools in Chipinge and Maata Primary in Chimanimani.
Giving an update this Monday, Permanent Secretary for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Mr Edgars Seenza said no significant damages have been recorded across the province.
“We want to thank the heavens because the eye of the cyclone, according to the Met Department, changed its course from Mozambique southwards and that spared us. As such, we are receiving low rains and the district which has received more rains is Chipinge and Chimanimani. In terms of road infrastructure, we haven’t received any reports because the rains were calm. We want to thank government for availing funding and our security forces for being actively on the ground, moreso, our provincial and district civil protection committees are on the ground and were very well prepared on any disaster. So far, people are happy that it appears the threat is no more. We have received reports of damages in Chipinge and we are currently assessing the costs involved so that we can plan on how to assist the schools as government,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Services Department says Cyclone Freddy has downgraded into a low-pressure system, with non-violent conditions, characterised by light rains, expected to persist across the country.
The Met Department, however, says the country remains on high alert as the rainfall season is still underway.
