Fans are desperate to find out as much information as possible about Grand Theft Auto 6. Although Rockstar has been strangely quiet in terms of detailing the title, there is still plenty of dominant reports and rumours that give fans a glimpse of what to expect.
One of the most talked-about elements of Grand Theft Auto 6 is its alleged setting, which is all but confirmed in the eyes of many. With this potential setting in mind, some context is finally given to one of the most confusing elements of Red Dead Redemption 2’s story. It remains to be confirmed, of course, but GTA 6’s setting could finally settle a longstanding debate among Rockstar fans.
Grand Theft Auto 6’s Rumoured Setting
The most commonly agreed setting for Grand Theft Auto 6 sees the franchise return to Vice City. An iconic location that took center stage in the 2006 title of the same name, many fans are excited at the prospect of returning to Vice City.
Rumors of Vice City being Grand Theft Auto 6’s setting have existed for years, but more recent developments have given cause to lock in on this line of thought. For example, the September 2022 leaks for GTA 6 revealed a lot about the title, including its setting. A lot of the leaked resources for GTA 6 heavily indicate a Vice City setting, with many fans now taking this as gospel.
Of course, Grand Theft Auto 6 is aiming to be an industry-defining title, and this is rumoured to reflect in the scale of its setting. It has been reported that GTA 6 will feature several locations outside of Vice City, including some Latin American islands. With this in mind, some longstanding rumours from Red Dead Redemption 2 may have finally been given some crucial context.
GTA 6’s Vice City and Red Dead Redemption 2’s Guarma
Although Red Dead Redemption 2‘s story was a critical success, there was one element in particular that confused many fans. In the fifth chapter of the game, players are swept away from the familiar plains of New Austin to an entirely new location. This location is the Caribbean island of Guarma, boasting stunning tropical flora and wildlife.
The player spends only part of a single chapter in this location, quickly returning to the main map of Red Dead Redemption 2, unable to return to the island. While Guarma offers a positive piece of variety in RDR2‘s locations, many players were left confused as to the purpose of the location and its narrative influence.
With the player being whisked away from Guarma as quickly as they are thrust into it, RDR2’s Guarma served as a confusing fever dream to many fans. Because of this, the RDR2 community has long debated the true purpose of Guarma, and GTA 6’s setting may finally provide the answer. For example, the previously mentioned Latin American islands that GTA 6 might include could share the flora and fauna of RDR2‘s Guarma. Many felt that Guarma could have been a testing ground for Rockstar to utilize some Caribbean assets for a future project, and GTA 6‘s setting essentially confirms this.
The rumors surrounding GTA 6‘s Vice City setting have a lot of validity, and are already proving useful in contextualizing other Rockstar projects. While Guarma was a strange part of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s story, its utility as a testing ground for GTA 6 could put to bed any discussion around its purpose.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in development.
