Mafikizolo ignites Zimstock with unforgettable Afropop magic

South African Afropop sensations Mafikizolo delivered a spellbinding performance yesterday at Zimstock, Harare’s premier family-friendly music festival held at Hellenic Primary School. The dynamic duo, Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Mafu, captivated the crowd with a selection of their classic hits, transforming the stage into a vibrant celebration of music and joy.

Formed in 1996 by Kalawa Jazmee in Johannesburg, Mafikizolo has carved out a significant place in the annals of African music. Despite the tragic loss of original member Tebogo Madingoane, who was shot and killed in February 2004, Mafikizolo has continued to shine. The group has chosen to honor Madingoane’s memory by not replacing him, thereby preserving his legacy and respecting his immense contribution to their success.

During their performance, Mafikizolo conveyed their profound connection with Zimbabwe. “Zimbabwe is like home for us,” Kgosinkwe remarked. “We always feel welcome all the time and thanks for the support.” Mafu added, “We have always felt at home here in Zimbabwe, whether performing in Harare or Bulawayo. We love you, thanks for the support.” Their heartfelt appreciation resonated with the audience, underscoring the strong and enduring bond between South African artists and Zimbabwean fans.

Despite some tensions related to xenophobia and Afrophobia, the reception for Mafikizolo at Zimstock reflected the warm relationship and mutual respect shared between the two nations. The festival served as a testament to the power of music in bridging divides and celebrating shared cultural ties.

Zimstock, one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated music festivals, kicked off at 4 pm with a diverse and impressive lineup. The young violinist Pendo Masote, from a distinguished musical family, delivered a captivating performance alongside the Hellenic Orchestra. The festival’s schedule included a rich array of local and international talent, ensuring an evening filled with musical brilliance.

Thamsanqa “Tamy” Moyo, a celebrated artist and actress, took the stage at 4:50 pm, adding her vibrant energy to the event. At 6 pm, South African rock band Sunset Sweatshop, known for their reggae and folk influences, performed to enthusiastic applause. The evening’s lineup continued with the legendary South African Afropop band Mango Groove at 7 pm, setting the stage for the highlight of the festival.

Mafikizolo’s performance at 8 pm marked the peak of Zimstock, delivering a high-energy set that had the audience dancing and singing along. Known for their innovative blend of Afropop, marabi, and kwela, Mafikizolo has maintained a dominant presence in African music for nearly three decades. Their extensive repertoire of hits continues to resonate with fans across generations, affirming their status as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary music acts.

Zimstock, held annually at the spacious grounds of Hellenic Primary School on Borrowdale Road, is celebrated for its family-friendly atmosphere and diverse lineup of artists. The festival stands as a major celebration of music, art, and culture, offering a platform for top talent and reinforcing Zimbabwe’s capacity to host world-class entertainment.

As one of the biggest music festivals of the year, Zimstock not only highlights exceptional talent but also fosters social cohesion and cultural appreciation. The event serves as a vibrant showcase of African music and community spirit, continuing to enrich the cultural tapestry of the region. With Mafikizolo’s unforgettable performance as a highlight, Zimstock once again demonstrated its role as a key player in celebrating and connecting African musical heritage and community.
