The stage is set for this year’s Castle Lager Braai Festival, taking place at the Old Hararians Sports Club on October 19. Headlining the event is the ever-popular Wallace ‘Winky D’ Chirumiko, who has made it clear he would “rather die than miss it.” This annual celebration of music and barbecue has consistently featured Winky D, a titan of Zim Dancehall, who boasts a 20-year catalog of hits and social commentary that resonates deeply with Zimbabwe’s youth, particularly those facing economic struggles. Joining him this year will be rising stars Master H and Saintfloew, along with South African sensation Kamo Mphela, promising an unforgettable lineup.
In a promotional video shared by Castle Lager, Winky D expressed his excitement: “Yes, it’s back again, the 2024 Castle Lager Braai Fest. I will not miss this one. I invite you to come and sing with me. We also have Master H ready to crush that stage, and Saintfloew—his spirit is always high!”
Winky D, often referred to as the Gaffa President, faced challenges leading up to the 2022 festival, including a significant blackout following the release of his album *Eureka Eureka*. This album critiqued the wealthy elite and was interpreted as a direct commentary on the corrupt practices within the ruling Zanu PF party. The backlash resulted in radio stations, many under Zanu PF control, implementing a blackout on his music. However, after public outcry, he returned as the festival’s main performer in 2023.
With a vibrant lineup and Winky D’s return, the 2024 Castle Lager Braai Festival promises to be a celebration filled with energy, music, and community spirit. Attendees are encouraged to come out, enjoy the festivities, and make memories that celebrate the best of Zimbabwean culture.
