Harare (New Ziana)-The Harare City Council will from Tuesday to Friday this week conduct a door-to-door polio vaccination exercise for children below five years as part of a national campaign to quell the threat of the disease, which broke out in some neighbouring countries late last year.
In a notice, the city council said children from age between 0 – 59 months may participate, regardless of vaccination status.
“City of Harare will join the rest of the country on the third round of Polio Supplementary Activities from 23 to 26 May 2023,” it said.
It said it was targeting to inoculate at least 95 percent of the estimated 325 851 children aged below five years in the city.
“The strategies which are going to be used are house to house, mobile, and static and the total teams are 507,” it explained.
The third national polio vaccination campaign is aimed at protecting children against polio as part of a comprehensive response to Polio outbreaks reported in Malawi and Mozambique recently.
The first round of vaccination in Zimbabwe took place from 27 to 30 October last year and the second round from 1 -4 December the same year, while the fourth would be conducted from 27 to 30 June this year.
Polio is a dangerous disease which causes paralysis and death particularly among children and is targeted for eradication globally.
