DESPITE being shrouded in mystery, the Nyau Culture, practised by Zimbabweans of Malawian and Zambian descent, has attracted interest among locals.
Prominent in Harare’s high-density suburbs of Mufakose, Mabvuku, Dzivarasekwa and Mbare, as well as farming and mining communities, Nyau dancers have become crowd-pullers as the young and old gather to witness the well-choreographed dances.
Dressed in multi-coloured creatively sewn customs topped with a face mask, the dancers follow the beat of drums as they dance to the delight of their audience.
Although there is an aura of mystery about the cultural practice, many are warming up to the Nyau culture.
“I used to be scared of Zvigure, but now I am realising that they are interesting and entertaining to watch,” said one of the residents who spoke to this news crew.
“Mostly we tend to be scared of things we do not understand but with time I have understood that it is just the same as hip hop,” said another resident.
Another said, “I love them they are fun to watch.”
“We should embrace each other with our differences they are fun to watch,” added another of the residents.
Born and raised in a family of expert Nyau dancers, Shamiso Mwalile takes pride in the cultural practice.
“There is nothing to be scared of because behind the masks are humans. I believe this culture of ours is beautiful if understood. People should take time to understand us and what we do. We appreciate those who come and watch us perform as they come to the realisation that we are good entertainers,” Mwalile noted.
Even popular musicians like Baba Harare have enlisted the services of Nyau dancers during their shows.
Viewed with suspicion and fear by outsiders, most probably due to the secrecy surrounding this cultural practice, many have sought to understand the principles and beliefs associated with the Nyau and what better time to do so than during this May as it is the culture month.
