Broad Alliance amplifies calls for the lifting of illegal sanctions

The fight against illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the United States of America and its Western allies has taken a new twist with the Broad Alliance Against Sanctions taking the issue to the High Court this Monday.

The organisation is seeking reparations over losses the country has suffered due to the illegal sanctions which have been in place for the past 23 years.

In the application, the organisation is demanding the US Embassy in Harare to justify why they have failed to remove illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, despite the fact that they were declared illegal by the United Nations.

“We are hoping that what our client seeks will be granted,” said the legal representative, Ms Rufaro Mhandu.

“The Broad Alliance against Sanctions has filed an application against the US Embassy, concerning that we have petitioned them several times and have met with the Ambassador but have not responded to us in written form,” noted spokesperson, Ms Sally Ngoni.

“We are requesting them to respond to us in written form as to why they have not removed Sanctions which were declared illegal and unjustified by the UN rapporteur (Professor Elena Douhan) in her report.”

“We are also filing for reparations for the losses the country has experienced for the 23 years we have been under sanctions. We are also demanding that the UN if we are an equal player in the United Nations and declared that these sanctions are illegal and unjustified, must take action against the US,” she added.

This is not the first time that Zimbabwean organisations have approached the courts over the illegal economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the US and its Western allies.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Movement has also filed a court application in South Africa against the illegal embargo.
