Emily Blunt is putting Hollywood on the back burner. The British actress, who stars in the hotly anticipated “Oppenheimer” film, explained the reason she’s looking to step away from the silver screen for at least a year.
“This year, I’m not working. I worked quite a bit last year and my oldest baby is nine, so we’re in the last year of single digits,” she said on iHeart’s “Table For Two with Bruce Bozzi” podcast. The “Devil Wears Prada” actress shares daughters Hazel, 9, and Violet, 6, with husband and fellow actor John Krasinski, whom she married in 2010.
“And I just feel [like] there are cornerstones to their day that are so important when they’re little,” she went on.
“And it’s, ‘Will you wake me up? Will you take me to school? Will you pick me up? Will you put me to bed?’ And I just need to be there for all of them for a good stretch. And I just felt that in my bones.”
The actress added that there was a great “emotional cost” to her and the kids when she takes on time-consuming projects.
She added that she’s “very prone to guilt.”
“I think maybe all mothers are,” she explained. “You’re just prone to feeling bad for, God forbid, wanting something outside of being a mother.”
“I am huge advocate for it — I’m a huge advocate for women being ambitious. It’s just dreams with purpose, it’s not an ugly word,” Blunt added.
It comes as Blunt recently admitted that she doesn’t want her children to follow in her footsteps of being an actress. The 40-year-old admitted that the cutthroat industry can be “very disappointing” for women due to its superficial element.
“My toes curl when people tell me, ‘My daughter wants to be an actress.’ I want to say, ‘don’t do it,’” she told Harper’s Bazaar UK.
“Because it’s a hard industry and it can be very disappointing. A lot of people tell you not to take things personally — but it’s completely personal, especially when you’re being judged on how you look. So you just have to endure that side of things.”
What’s more, the “A Quiet Place” star’s fame isn’t “exciting” for her kids, saying she’s “completely disassociated” with the level of stardom she’s reached.
