Prince Harry indulged in a special treat on the night before his 39th birthday as he took to a local restaurant with his wife Meghan Markle.
The couple took a group of their aides for dinner at Im Goldened Kessel restaurant in Dusseldorf on Thursday, tucking into plates of traditional grub – including bratwurst, red cabbage and mashed potato. They were seen laughing and joking throughout the night, with Harry drinking six beers while Meghan also enjoyed one. Staff were understandably extremely excited by their royal diners, and were delighted when the couple posed for photos with them.
Wanting to make the night extra special, staff at the restaurant surprised the royal with a white chocolate cake ahead of his 39th birthday today. The restaurant’s owner Thea Ungermann revealed that the birthday boy picked up the tab for the whole group and left a “big tip” for the staff.
“The couple were very relaxed, they drank our beer, Schumacher Alt – it’s the same beer they are serving at the Invictus Games,” she said. “Harry and Meghan sat next to each other during the meal.
Thea told the MailOnline : “I had goosebumps when they walked into the restaurant, I had watched his speech on the stage at the Invictus Games and couldn’t believe he was in my restaurant. Prince Harry was so lovely and gave me a hug.”
Harry and Meghan are due to stay in Dusseldorf, Germany, until the end of the Invictus Games on Saturday, after which they’ll return home to Montecito, California, leaving Harry to spend the majority of his birthday weekend in Europe. Upon their return, Harry’s older brother Prince William is set to be in the States as the same time as the couple, but it’s unlikely the pair will meet.
The Prince of Wales has also reportedly flat-out refused to answer questions about his younger brother upon his trip to New York for New York Climate Change Week . An aide said: “This trip is part of his evolution as a global statesman which is incredibly important, especially since becoming Prince of Wales.
“He and his courtiers have been thinking about how to manage that transition from Duke of Cambridge to the next king. The US is very important to him. The world’s climate movers and shakers will be in New York having conversations about the future of the planet and the prince is keen to be part of those conversations and put Earthshot front and centre.”
