Pitso Mosimane praises talent of Zimbabwean football players

Renowned South African football coach Pitso Mosimane attributes much of his coaching success in the Premier Soccer League to Zimbabwean players, as he revealed in an interview with veteran sportscaster Robert Marawa on the Marawa Sports Worldwide show.

Mosimane, a former coach of Bafana Bafana, has solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s top coaches with three CAF Champions League titles—once with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 and twice with Al Ahly in 2020 and 2021. Alongside these continental triumphs, he boasts five South African Premier Soccer League titles and six cup trophies.

Known for his strategy of giving foreign players significant opportunities in the South African league, Mosimane highlighted the crucial role Zimbabwean players played in his teams’ success.

“I used to recruit players from Zimbabwe, such as Khama Billiat, Cuthbert Malajila, Method Mwanjali, Kuda Mahachi, and others,” Mosimane shared. “I would conduct my pre-season training in Zimbabwe, where I scheduled matches against CAPS United, Highlanders, and Dynamos.”

He emphasized the talent pool in Zimbabwe, explaining, “I chose these teams deliberately because of the high level of talent present in Zimbabwean football. If I were to manage a Premier League team today that isn’t among the top clubs, I would still opt to conduct my pre-season training in Zimbabwe against these formidable opponents. From these matches, I would often identify one or two exceptional players whom I could later recruit for Sundowns, Pirates, or Chiefs.”

Mosimane’s approach not only underscores his strategic foresight in talent scouting but also highlights the significant impact Zimbabwean footballers have had on his coaching career in South Africa.
