In a strategic move aimed at bolstering its workforce and financial performance, Air Zimbabwe has announced the reopening of its commercial and technical training schools. The decision was revealed by the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Edmund Makona, during a recent tour by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development.
Mr. Makona emphasized that the reopening of these training divisions is a crucial step in enhancing the airline’s operational efficiency and financial sustainability. “We have reopened our commercial training division and technical schools as part of our human development programs. This will help us save costs and generate income,” he stated.
The reactivation of the technical school is particularly significant as it will now offer International Air Transport Association (IATA) qualifications locally. Previously, Air Zimbabwe staff were required to travel to South Africa or Kenya to obtain these credentials, which added to the company’s operational expenses and logistical challenges.
The move aligns with Air Zimbabwe’s broader strategic goals of improving its internal capabilities and reducing dependency on external training resources. By providing these training programs domestically, the airline aims to enhance its human resources while simultaneously creating an additional revenue stream from training services.
Mr. Makona’s announcement highlights Air Zimbabwe’s commitment to strengthening its operational base and addressing the skills gap within the industry. The training schools are expected to play a pivotal role in upskilling employees, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet international standards and contribute effectively to the airline’s growth and development. The reopening of these facilities marks a significant step forward for Air Zimbabwe as it continues to navigate the challenges of the aviation sector and work towards achieving greater self-sufficiency and operational excellence.
