Zimbabwe bus operators urged to improve services following Kombi ban

Large bus operators are bracing for a surge in demand following new government regulations that limit commuter omnibuses to a 60 km operational radius. This policy shift, announced by Transport Minister Felix Mhona, aims to enhance road safety by confining kombis to urban and peri-urban routes, leaving longer journeys to buses with a capacity of over 26 passengers.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to tackle rising road safety concerns, which include the installation of speed and monitoring devices in all kombis. Mhona emphasized that these measures are essential for reducing accidents and improving overall road safety.

Bus operators have reassured the public that there will be no shortage of transportation options. They have a sufficient fleet to handle the anticipated increase in passengers and are working diligently to expand services to rural areas. Key steps include enhancing safety protocols, such as ensuring speed compliance, implementing rigorous driver training programs, and utilizing real-time bus tracking systems.

However, the new restrictions have sparked concern among the Greater Harare Association of Commuter Omnibuses, who feel unprepared for the sudden changes. The association is seeking a dialogue with the government to address their concerns and navigate the transition effectively.

The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has highlighted the urgency of these new measures, citing a troubling rise in road accidents. Over 1,500 fatalities were recorded in the first nine months of 2023 alone, with the economic impact of road accidents exceeding US$400 million annually. The council’s data underscores the critical need for reform to mitigate the devastating effects of road traffic incidents.

As the country adapts to these new regulations, both bus operators and commuter omnibus associations are tasked with ensuring a smooth transition. The government’s efforts to enhance road safety reflect a growing commitment to addressing the serious issues that contribute to road accidents and their severe consequences.
