Local residents and shopkeepers recounted the frightening moment when the gas cylinder exploded. The explosion’s impact was powerful enough to shake windows and send people scrambling out of shops and vendor stalls. “I was inside my store when I heard a loud bang. People started shouting and running. By the time I got outside, the car was already on fire,” said a shop owner at Mayenziwe Shopping Centre.
“The flames were high and thick smoke filled the area. We were all afraid there could be another explosion,” added another eyewitness. Fortunately, the quick response from the fire department helped to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles or structures. Mr. Moyo noted that the fire crew managed to extinguish the blaze before it could cause further damage.
Fire Department Urges Caution in Handling Gas Cylinders
Following the incident, Mr. Moyo emphasized the urgent need for proper safety measures when transporting gas cylinders in private or commercial vehicles. He warned that improper handling, especially in confined spaces like car interiors, poses a serious threat not only to vehicle owners but to the public at large.
We urge residents to be extremely careful when handling and transporting gas. These cylinders must be stored upright, in well-ventilated areas, and never left unattended in enclosed spaces like vehicles,” he said.
He also revealed that the Bulawayo Fire Department will be stepping up public awareness campaigns to educate people on safe gas cylinder use and emergency response procedures.
Rising Gas Usage in Zimbabwe Raises Safety Concerns
Zimbabwe has seen a significant increase in gas cylinder usage in recent years due to persistent power outages and load-shedding. Many households and businesses rely on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking, heating, and even refrigeration. However, this surge in usage has not been matched with adequate safety training and enforcement, leading to a rise in gas-related incidents.
Industry experts and fire safety officials have repeatedly warned that the lack of standardized gas storage practices, especially in informal setups and transportation, creates conditions ripe for disaster.
The incident in Nkulumane highlights the risks associated with carrying large gas cylinders in private vehicles without proper ventilation or safety equipment. In this case, the Honda Fit was reportedly transporting a 48kg cylinder—a size typically used for household or commercial gas supply.
In response to this incident, local authorities are now calling for stronger regulation and licensing for those involved in gas distribution and transport. There are also growing calls for public education campaigns to raise awareness of basic gas cylinder safety tips, such as:
-
Always check for leaks before transporting a gas cylinder.
-
Never transport gas cylinders in enclosed vehicles without proper ventilation.
-
Keep cylinders upright and secure to prevent tipping or impact.
-
Avoid exposing cylinders to high temperatures or direct sunlight for extended periods.
The explosion at Mayenziwe Shopping Centre serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by mishandled gas cylinders. While no lives were lost in the Nkulumane incident, the destruction of the vehicle and the panic caused in the community underscore the importance of stringent safety measures.
As the use of gas cylinders rises sharply across Zimbabwe, ensuring safety has become more critical than ever. With frequent power outages and increased reliance on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking and heating, more households and businesses depend on gas cylinders daily. However, this growing demand also raises the risk of accidents if safety measures are not properly observed.
It is essential for authorities, citizens, and businesses to join forces in promoting awareness about the safe handling, storage, and transportation of gas cylinders. Proper education on identifying leaks, securing cylinders correctly, and ensuring adequate ventilation during transport can prevent potentially deadly explosions.
Government agencies must strengthen regulations and enforce safety standards, while public campaigns can empower communities with knowledge on how to avoid hazards. Businesses distributing and transporting gas cylinders also have a responsibility to prioritize safety protocols.
