The explosion’s impact was powerful enough to shake windows and send people scrambling out of shops and vendor stalls. “I was inside my store when I heard a loud bang. People started shouting and running. By the time I got outside, the car was already on fire,” said a shop owner at Mayenziwe Shopping Centre.
“The flames were high and thick smoke filled the area. We were all afraid there could be another explosion,” added another eyewitness. Fortunately, the quick response from the fire department helped to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles or structures. Mr. Moyo noted that the fire crew managed to extinguish the blaze before it could cause further damage.
Fire Department Urges Caution in Handling Gas Cylinders
Following the incident, Mr. Moyo emphasized the urgent need for proper safety measures when transporting gas cylinders in private or commercial vehicles. He warned that improper handling, especially in confined spaces like car interiors, poses a serious threat not only to vehicle owners but to the public at large.
We urge residents to be extremely careful when handling and transporting gas. These cylinders must be stored upright, in well-ventilated areas, and never left unattended in enclosed spaces like vehicles,” he said.
He also revealed that the Bulawayo Fire Department will be stepping up public awareness campaigns to educate people on safe gas cylinder use and emergency response procedures.
