A dark cloud hangs over Gombamwa Village in Bindura following the tragic death of a local fisherman, Tonderai Chingoma, who drowned while fishing in Masembura Dam. The incident has left the tight-knit community in shock and mourning, as villagers remember a man known for his hard work and dedication to his trade.
The drowning occurred while Chingoma was casting fishing nets in the dam, a common practice among local fishermen who rely on the water body for their livelihood. It is believed that he slipped from his improvised flotation device—a swimming tube—and was unable to regain balance or swim to safety.
Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Milton Mundembe, confirmed the heartbreaking incident. “I can confirm a case of sudden death in Bindura where Chingoma drowned while casting his fishing nets yesterday,” he said.
According to preliminary reports, Fisherman was alone at the time of the incident. His body was later discovered by fellow villager Paradzai Nyika, who noticed it floating in the dam and immediately notified the authorities. A rescue team was quickly dispatched to the scene, and the body was retrieved before being transported to Bindura Hospital for post-mortem examination and further procedures.
The late fisherman, described by neighbors as humble and hardworking, was a well-known figure in the area. He had spent years fishing in Masembura Dam, providing fresh fish not only for his family but also for the surrounding community. His sudden death has shaken residents, who now call for better safety awareness and measures for local fishermen who risk their lives daily in the pursuit of income.
“Chingoma was not just a fisherman. He was a father, a brother, and a friend to many. He took pride in his work and always made sure to share his catch with those in need,” said one villager. “It’s painful to lose someone in such a manner.”
Fisherman Drowns in Masembura Dam: Gombamwa Village in Mourning
The tragedy has reignited concerns about safety practices among local fishermen in rural Zimbabwe, where access to proper fishing gear and flotation devices is limited. Many, like Chingoma, rely on makeshift equipment such as inner tubes or homemade boats to carry out their work—often without life jackets or adequate swimming skills.
In response to the incident, police have issued a strong warning to the public about the dangers of fishing and swimming in dams without proper precautions. “We urge community members to avoid entering or fishing near water bodies without the appropriate safety equipment,” said Inspector Mundembe. “Such activities can quickly turn fatal, as we have sadly witnessed in this case.”
The police also encouraged communities to look out for one another and report any potentially dangerous practices near water sources. They stressed the importance of working together to ensure that tragedies like this one are avoided in the future.
Chief Masembura, under whose jurisdiction the village falls, expressed his condolences to the Fisherman family and urged fishermen to take extra care while working on the water. “This is a great loss to the community. Our fishermen play an important role in local food security and the economy, and we must ensure their safety is prioritized,” he said.
Calls are also growing for local authorities and non-governmental organizations to assist in training rural fishermen on water safety and provide proper gear such as life jackets and boats with safety features. Some residents have suggested the formation of a local cooperative for fishermen, which could help improve safety standards and pool resources for better equipment.
As Gombamwa Village prepares to bury one of its own, the loss of Tonderai Chingoma serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by fishermen in Zimbabwe’s rural communities. It also highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, infrastructure, and support to protect those who make their living from the country’s lakes and dams.
Fisherman ’s family has received messages of sympathy from far and wide, with many offering prayers and donations to assist with funeral arrangements. He leaves behind a grieving family and a community forever marked by his tragic passing.
The fisherman’s legacy, however, lives on in the waters he once fished—now flowing with sorrow, but also filled with memories of a man who gave his all to provide for those he loved.
