The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has conveyed its profound condolences to the Kano State Government, its people, and the grieving families of 21 athletes who tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident at Gadar Yankifi, in the Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.
The devastating incident occurred on Saturday as the young athletes were on their way home after participating in the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Ogun State. What should have been a joyous journey marking their involvement in a prestigious sporting event instead turned into a national tragedy, casting a pall of sorrow across the country.
The Kano State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that 21 individuals were killed in the crash, while 11 others sustained various degrees of injuries. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, providing medical attention to the injured and helping with the recovery of the deceased.
The tragedy has triggered an outpouring of grief and solidarity from across the nation. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, and numerous other dignitaries have publicly expressed their sympathies and extended support to the bereaved families and the Kano State Government.
Reacting to the incident, NANS, in a statement released on Saturday by its National Public Relations Officer, Samson Adeyemi, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a monumental blow not only to the affected families but also to the student community and the broader Nigerian youth.
“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss. Our hearts go out to the bereaved families, His Excellency the Governor of Kano State, the Kano State Sports Council, and all citizens of Kano who are currently in mourning. The entire nation shares in this grief,” the statement read.
Adeyemi emphasized the symbolic and emotional impact of the deceased athletes, noting that their commitment to representing their state on a national platform showcased the power of youth in nation-building and the unifying spirit of sports.
“These were not just athletes; they were symbols of hope, discipline, and unity. Their loss has left a void that extends beyond their immediate families. They were ambassadors of peace and sportsmanship, and their absence will be deeply felt,” he said.
In the wake of the incident, NANS has called on both federal and state governments to urgently improve travel safety standards for athletes and students participating in national events. The association urged authorities to reevaluate existing transportation policies and ensure safer logistics for future travel.
“We are calling for concrete actions, not just condolences,” Adeyemi said. “The safety and well-being of our athletes must be a top priority. Government must provide roadworthy vehicles, employ qualified and trained drivers, and enforce strict adherence to road safety measures.”
He also insisted that an independent and transparent investigation must be conducted to uncover the root causes of the accident. According to Adeyemi, the findings of such an inquiry should inform future decisions aimed at preventing similar tragedies.
“An in-depth investigation into what led to this crash is essential. We owe it to the victims and their families to ensure that their deaths were not in vain. The results should be made public, and necessary reforms implemented to make our roads safer,” he added.

As the nation mourns, NANS reminded the public of the broader implications of the accident and the critical need for urgent reforms. The association underscored that the protection and welfare of Nigeria’s youth—particularly those serving the nation through sports, academics, and cultural representation—must be treated as a national priority.
The National Sports Festival, designed as a platform to foster national integration and showcase youthful talent, has now become a painful reminder of the dangers faced by those who answer the call of national service. While the event itself is a celebration of excellence, discipline, and unity, this tragedy has highlighted the need for institutional safeguards to ensure the safety of participants.
In conclusion, NANS reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for Nigerian students and youths, vowing to continue pushing for reforms that promote safety, equity, and respect for life.
“We mourn with Kano, and with the entire nation. As we honor the memory of these fallen heroes, let us also rise to the occasion by making their legacy one that inspires action, justice, and lasting change,” the statement concluded.NANS.
