What began as a day of celebration in Chiredzi ended in horror on Monday evening when a violent altercation at a township bar claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.
Police confirmed that Cornelius Garawaziva was fatally stabbed during an incident at Farai Bar in Tshovani township, turning a Heroes’ Day meant to unite communities into a night of grief and shock.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Garawaziva had been drinking at the popular bar from around 7 pm. At about 9:30 pm, he engaged in what witnesses described as a light-hearted conversation with the bartender, Vimbai Mwaizuya. Unbeknown to him, Mwaizuya’s ex-husband, 44-year-old Walter Checha, was in the bar and watching the exchange.
What followed was a sudden eruption of violence. Police say Checha, apparently angered by Garawaziva’s brief chat with his former wife, confronted the young patron. In the heated moment, Checha allegedly produced an unidentified sharp object and stabbed Garawaziva on the left side of the chest.
Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, spokesperson for the Masvingo provincial police, confirmed the tragic events. “The suspect, Walter Checha, became enraged after seeing the now deceased talking to his ex-wife, who works as a bartender at the establishment. He approached Garawaziva and stabbed him once in the chest with an unknown object. Sadly, the victim died on the spot,” Dhewa said.
Police reacted swiftly, arresting Checha shortly after the incident. He is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court soon on murder charges. Authorities have since launched a full investigation to establish the precise details of the altercation, including how Checha managed to smuggle the weapon into the bar.
The murder weapon has not yet been recovered, and police have appealed to members of the public with information to assist in their inquiries.
The news of the killing spread quickly across Chiredzi and Masvingo Province, with many residents expressing disbelief that a celebration meant to honour national heroes had ended in such tragedy.
Farai Bar, located in Tshovani high-density suburb, is known as a lively entertainment spot. On public holidays such as Heroes’ Day, it usually attracts large crowds of revellers. Witnesses described the atmosphere before the incident as cheerful, with many enjoying drinks, games, and music.
Jealous Rage: Man Stabs Bar Patron for Talking to His Ex-Wife
“It was a happy day, everyone was in high spirits,” said one patron, who requested anonymity. “Then suddenly there was shouting and chaos. Before we even understood what was happening, Cornelius had collapsed and people were screaming. It was shocking.”
Friends and relatives of Garawaziva were left devastated by his sudden death. At just 20 years old, he was described as a cheerful and ambitious young man whose life had barely begun. “Cornelius was full of energy and had so many plans for his future. For him to die like this, over something so senseless, is unbearable,” a family friend said.
Community leaders in Tshovani condemned the incident, urging residents to find non-violent ways of resolving disputes. They also highlighted the dangers of alcohol-fuelled conflicts, which often escalate into violence.
Inspector Dhewa used the tragedy as a reminder of the devastating consequences of jealousy and violence. He urged members of the public to exercise restraint in emotionally charged situations and to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes.
“Lives are being lost unnecessarily due to uncontrolled anger and violent behaviour. We continue to call upon citizens to resolve their differences amicably and avoid taking the law into their own hands,” he said.
Police also warned bar owners and patrons to remain vigilant during busy holidays when large gatherings can sometimes turn volatile. Ensuring safety in public spaces, they said, requires cooperation between the police, business owners, and communities.
The stabbing has reignited concerns about gender-based tensions and domestic-related violence spilling into public spaces. Though Checha and Mwaizuya were no longer married, his actions highlight how unresolved personal conflicts can erupt in tragic ways.
Social commentators have also pointed to the need for more public awareness around anger management, relationship breakdowns, and the importance of respecting boundaries after separation.
As the community mourns, attention now shifts to the courts, where Checha is expected to face justice. Legal experts say he could be charged with murder, a crime that carries a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
For the Garawaziva family, however, no verdict will bring back their son. “We just want justice to be done,” a grieving relative said. “Cornelius did not deserve to die like this.”
What should have been a day to honour the sacrifices of Zimbabwe’s national heroes instead became a day marked by violence and sorrow in Chiredzi. The tragedy serves as yet another reminder of how jealousy and unresolved conflict can destroy lives in an instant.
