The 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer league season is turning out to be the most competitive in recent years with the top nine teams just separated by five points after 11 outings.
CAPS United, Highlanders, Ngezi Platinum Stars and Dynamos have all been to the summit of the log standings but they have not lasted long as the seesaw affair at the top of the table continues.
With the fans back to the stadia in their numbers, the teams have also dished out their best football with the top nine teams just separated by just five points after match day 11.
Ngezi Platinum Stars, who returned to the top of the log after beating Dynamos 2-1, have 20 points while ninth placed Hwange have 15 points after 11 games.
There is not much breathing space between the teams, and this has opened a window of opportunity to defending champions FC Platinum who had a slow start to the season.
The Zvishavane based side is back in the reckoning with 18 points after winning their last two matches.
Bulawayo Chiefs, who are undefeated in their last six matches, are just a point behind FC Platinum.
At the same stage last season, Dynamos, CAPS United and Manica Diamonds had moved away from the chasing pack, opening a five-point lead even though none of them lasted the distance.
While for some the biggest worry is the lack of goals with all the teams averaging a goal or less per match, the opposite could be true as alluded to by some analysts who believe it illustrates how tight the competition has been thus far.
Ngezi Platinum have been the most lethal after finding the back of the net 17 times, while Black Rhinos who anchor the log standings have scored just three times.
It might be early days yet, but the signs are not good for the army side who have six points in 11 matches, while the three teams above them – Sheasham, Green Fuel and Cranborne Bullets have 10 points each.
