The sudden death of Wicknell Chivayo has taken on an even more emotional dimension because of its timing — just days before a major wedding involving one of the businessman’s closest celebrity associates, Jah Prayzah.
Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, died when a helicopter carrying six people crashed in the Marondera district on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.
The tragedy came barely a day after legendary musician Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo arrived back in Zimbabwe ahead of two private performances that Chivayo had agreed to fund.
One of those performances was set for Jah Prayzah’s wedding this weekend.
The other was scheduled for Chivayo’s own birthday and housewarming celebration later in the year.
That makes the businessman’s death particularly poignant. A huge entertainment moment he had spent months helping to create was only days away.
Wicknell Chivayo and Jah Prayzah Shared a Very Public Bond
The relationship between Wicknell Chivayo and Jah Prayzah had grown into one of Zimbabwe’s most talked-about celebrity friendships.
Chivayo regularly praised the musician and repeatedly rewarded him with cars and large cash gifts.
Their association stretched back years, but it became particularly visible from 2024 onwards.
Jah Prayzah previously received a Mercedes-Benz S500 reportedly worth around US$180,000 from the businessman.
In May 2025, Chivayo again made headlines when he presented Jah Prayzah with a new Range Rover Autobiography together with US$150,000 in cash.
Members of Jah Prayzah’s Third Generation Band were also beneficiaries of Chivayo’s generosity, receiving vehicles as part of a major gifting spree.
For Chivayo, the musician appeared to occupy a special place among the entertainers he supported.
US$250,000 and Ford Ranger Gift Came Before Wedding Announcement
Their connection became even more visible when Jah Prayzah celebrated his 39th birthday in July 2026.
Chivayo presented the singer with a 2026 Ford Ranger Platinum and US$250,000 in cash.
However, it was what followed that turned the celebration into a much bigger entertainment story.
Chivayo publicly announced that he wanted Thomas Mapfumo to perform at Jah Prayzah’s anticipated wedding.
He offered to pay the veteran Chimurenga star US$500,000 for the wedding performance.
The proposal immediately dominated entertainment headlines.
Thomas Mapfumo Accepts Wicknell Chivayo’s Deal
Mapfumo initially became the centre of intense debate over whether he would accept the businessman’s money.
The situation attracted even more attention because Mapfumo had historically been critical of Zimbabwe’s political leadership, while Chivayo was publicly associated with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and ZANU-PF.
Eventually, Mukanya accepted.
The final arrangement was reported as a US$1 million package for two performances, with US$500,000 allocated to each appearance.
One was Jah Prayzah’s wedding.
The second was Chivayo’s birthday and housewarming celebration later in the year.
Mapfumo made it clear that he viewed the trip as professional work.
He also described Jah Prayzah affectionately as his “son” and said the younger musician would be happy to have him performing at his wedding.
Mapfumo Arrived Just Before Wicknell Chivayo Died
In an extraordinary twist of timing, Thomas Mapfumo landed in Zimbabwe on 29 September after spending years in the United States.
Senior government officials were among those who welcomed the music legend at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
His arrival generated massive excitement because Jah Prayzah’s wedding was reportedly scheduled for that weekend.
Preparations were already gathering momentum.
Then, barely a day later, news broke that Chivayo’s helicopter had crashed near Marondera.
There were no survivors.
Suddenly, the man who had funded Mapfumo’s highly anticipated return and helped turn Jah Prayzah’s wedding into one of Zimbabwe’s biggest entertainment events was gone.
Chivayo Had Been Excited About Jah Prayzah’s Wedding
When Chivayo first discussed the wedding publicly, he joked that even though he had not yet received an invitation, he intended to attend.
He spoke about arriving with traditional household wedding gifts such as plates, a microwave and a refrigerator.
But his biggest proposed gift was Mapfumo’s performance.
The idea was symbolic.
Chivayo described Mapfumo as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest music icons and Jah Prayzah’s musical mentor.
Bringing the two generations together at a wedding was supposed to create an unforgettable moment.
Now that moment will inevitably carry a very different meaning.
Jah Prayzah Wedding Now Overshadowed by Tragedy
Jah Prayzah had kept many details surrounding the wedding private.
However, reports this week indicated that the ceremony was approaching, while his wife Rufaro had already held a bridal shower.
More than 30 musicians were also reportedly being lined up around the celebration.
But the death of Chivayo has dramatically changed the atmosphere surrounding what was expected to be one of Zimbabwe’s biggest celebrity weddings.
For Jah Prayzah, the tragedy is also deeply personal.
Chivayo had publicly supported him, defended him against critics and repeatedly celebrated his contribution to Zimbabwean music.
Their friendship became impossible to separate from many of Jah Prayzah’s biggest public moments.
Wicknell Chivayo’s Final Days Were Still Linked to Music
Perhaps one of the most striking parts of Chivayo’s final chapter is how closely it remained connected to Zimbabwean entertainment.
Only months earlier, he had made the extraordinary offer that convinced Mapfumo to return.
Only days before his death, preparations for those performances were still moving ahead.
Mapfumo had already arrived.
Jah Prayzah’s wedding was reportedly days away.
Chivayo’s own birthday celebration was scheduled for later in the year.
Instead, Zimbabwe woke up to the shocking reality that the businessman and his wife had died in a helicopter crash.
The celebrations Chivayo had helped set in motion will now unfold under the shadow of a tragedy few could have imagined.
