Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are unlikely to enjoy a royal Christmas this year – with their children set to miss a big gesture, an expert has claimed.
Reports have suggested that Harry is keen to have a base in the UK now he and wife Meghan Markle no longer have use of Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate after being forced to hand back the keys. It has been rumoured that Harry could opt for a private property he would purchase himself, rather than rely on a place from his estranged father King Charles.
But one royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop believes any home purchase in the UK or return to the country for the Sussexes will be very unlikely – and with Christmas fast approaching, it will also mean their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will miss out on one thing.
Tessa told the Mirror: “Christmas is coming and we want Meghan and Harry to inject the Windsor brand with a bit of Transatlantic tension. But don’t hold your breath, just as Harry was a no-show at Balmoral this summer it is unlikely that he’ll grace Sandringham with his presence. Far from buying a penthouse near London, it doesn’t even look like King Charles will get a Christmas cuddle with those absent grandchildren.”
Since moving to California more than three years ago, Harry has only made fleeting visits back to the UK – and is also embroiled in a legal battle with the Home Office over his security when he is back in his homeland.
And Tessa added: “The Sussexes are going to house-hunt in and around London, at least so goes the rumour. Despite his father owning more homes than you or I have hot dinners (try counting them) by all accounts Harry’s mooted return to the UK will not see him lean on his father’s estate.
“Rather the pair will branch out and buy somewhere of their own, in a mission driven by homesick Harry. As with so many Sussex rumours, the subtext here is marital tension. Meghan is just fine in California with her celebrity chums, hot new agent and pending return as an influencer. Not so Harry, who is often pictured looking, well, spare. (The Beyonce concert anyone?) We are served clips of him in awkward shiny shoes (World Mental Health Day in New York) or being upstaged by his suave, expensively understated wife.
“Just as Camilla was the evil adulterer until we discovered a gentle and, even pretty, Queen, Harry is being curated as the little lost boy, a square peg in an American hole who wants to come home. We Brits want to believe Harry can’t manage without us, that he misses the brother he has told us he was never close to, the father he is no longer speaking to and the country he slammed in his H&M drone-athon Netflix series.”
Tessa pointed out that both Harry and Meghan are obsessed with their security – which they now have to pay for in the UK. And she poses the question if it is the British public who is missing Harry and would like to see more of him in his home country.
She added: “His 2023 UK pitstops have included a very expensive legal battle with the British press, a blink-and-you-miss-him Coronation moment and a charity event pre- Invictus Games in Germany. These are not the actions of a man who is about to start house-hunting in the UK.
“I’m sure Harry would like a bolthole in London (it’s his home city after all) but it makes no sense for the safety-obsessed Sussexes to invest in a private property when they can bunk up with cousins on the Windsor estate or stay in one of London’s working palaces where the security brief is on-tap.
“Rather it is we the British public who are missing Harry. Let’s face it, this new more discreet Duke and Duchess who keep themselves to themselves in America, popping up occasionally to do good works is a bit boring.”
