Man dies in Algoa Bay waters

A 39-year-old Sri Lankan man, formerly a seafarer, passed away in Algoa Bay, located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. According to Jonathan Tufts, deputy station commander of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Gqeberha, efforts to save the man’s life were unsuccessful despite intensive interventions by NSRI and EC Government Health EMS paramedics.

Tufts reported that the incident began with an emergency call at 9:26 am on Thursday, June 27. The NSRI Gqeberha crew responded to a distress call for medical assistance aboard a container motor vessel anchored at anchorage 1 in Algoa Bay, offshore from the Port of Port Elizabeth. The man aboard was experiencing a severe medical condition.

Upon arrival at the vessel, the NSRI MEX crew and EMS paramedics were promptly transferred aboard. They found the man under the care of the ship’s medical team in critical condition. Advanced medical procedures were initiated, but unfortunately, the patient went into cardiac arrest.

Despite vigorous CPR efforts, including successful resuscitation on two occasions, the man remained in serious condition. Paramedics and NSRI MEX crew continued their efforts aboard the vessel, providing extensive medical treatment.

“After exhaustive attempts to revive him, the man was tragically declared deceased,” stated Tufts.

Tufts acknowledged the collaboration of various agencies in managing the emergency response, including the Transnet National Ports Authority of Port Elizabeth Port Control, NSRI Gqeberha duty controllers, EC Government Health EMS Metro Control, the SA Police Services – Police Sea Borderline Control, a WC Government Health EMS duty doctor, and Telkom Maritime Radio Services, all coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC).
