On Saturday night, a harrowing mass shooting claimed the lives of six men in Section V6 of uMlazi, a township southwest of Durban. The incident has sparked a massive manhunt by police in KwaZulu-Natal, who are seeking the suspects responsible for this brutal act of violence.
According to reports, the tragedy unfolded when three men were sitting outside their rented accommodation, consuming alcohol. Unknown assailants approached and opened fire, killing the three men on the spot. The suspects then proceeded to the landlord’s house, where they shot and killed the landlord and another man inside. Additionally, another man was shot on the pathway near the scene.
All six victims, aged between 20 and 40 years, were pronounced dead at the scene. The motive behind the killings remains unclear at this time.
KwaZulu-Natal Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda stated that the search for the suspects is ongoing. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward. This violent incident adds to a troubling pattern of mass shootings in the province. In November of last year, financial and organized crime investigator Chad Thomas from IRS Forensic Investigations South Africa highlighted that the proliferation of weapons is a significant factor contributing to such violence. According to Thomas, many of these weapons are remnants from the unrest of the early 1990s, while others have been stolen from law enforcement authorities.
“KZN has a culture of violence and it has become very easy to settle scores through murder for hire,” Thomas remarked. He emphasized the low level of accountability and the prevailing belief among perpetrators that there would be no consequences for their actions. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, the police’s continued efforts to apprehend those responsible are crucial in addressing the cycle of violence that has plagued the region.
