Award-winning journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, has mocked Zimdancehall chanter, Enzo Ishall born Stephen Kudzanai Mamhere saying waka-shaker after the chanter performed dismally in the ZANU PF primaries held on Saturday.
Waka-shaker is a colloquial term for losing value or depreciation which was used in Winky D‘s song Mbinga Yakashaker which featured Enzo Ishall.
In a social media post, Chin’ono said:
Popular dancehall singer Enzo (shall real name Kudzanai Mamhare contested in the recent ZANUPF primary elections and got only 7 votes out of 1,385 in Sunningdale 🤣🤣🤣
I don’t understand why the young man chose to taint his name joining one of the most corrupt parties under the sun and face the humiliation of being rejected 🤣🤣🤣
Now the youths are calling him Enzo 007 🤣🤣🤣
Enzo 007 waka Shaker-Shaker 🤣🤣🤣
The Kanjiva hitmaker got the least number of votes.
There have been several Zimbabwean musicians who have contested for political office over the years. Here are a few notable examples:
1). Hosiah Chipanga: Chipanga is a musician and songwriter who announced intentions to run for the presidency in Zimbabwe in 2013 but reportedly chickened out at the eleventh hour. He received only a small percentage of the vote when he contested to be Dangamvura-Chikanga’s member of Parliament in March 2022.
2). Energy Mutodi: Mutodi is a musician and former government spokesperson who was appointed as Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services in Zimbabwe in 2018. However, he was fired from his position in 2020 after making controversial statements on social media.
These are just a few examples of Zimbabwean musicians who have tried their hand at politics.
Many musicians have, however, made political comments on several occasions or through music with Thomas Mapfumo eventually forced to leave Zimbabwe for criticising the government.
